FC Shakhtar Donetsk VS Marseille

Shakhtar Donetsk and Marseille lock horns in this UEFA Europa League Playoffs first leg clash early Friday morning Beijing time. Unfortunately Shakhtar, the greatest club in Ukraine, cannot play in their home country because of the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, the home advantage is still there as a huge number of Ukrainians and fans sympathetic to them are expected to be at the stadium. This is the second-highest of UEFA's club competitions. Football fans and us serious, profit-hungry football bettors can expect a match of pretty level by this league's standards here! Most importantly we have yet another very promising game to bet on here. My fans and I have won seven picks betting on this league! There is, of course, no doubt about the fact that Marseille are the better team here. They deserve to beat the favourites but the current odds of around 2.30 are still too low. A very balanced clash is on the cards here and we will back the hosts with the +0.5 goals handicap. Shakhtar are currently only in the 4th place in the Ukrainian Premier League with 31 points to their account. This is three points less than Kryvbas, the current leaders, have grabbed. However, I will not let this fool me! Their number of expected points (xPTS) is much higher. Their mainly Ukrainian team is full of young, fast, skilled and very promising players.

Shakhtar played well in the UEFA Champions League last autumn, taking nine points in the tough group H. They even beat Barcelona at a neutral location in Germany. They also beat Antwerp, a team from Belgium, twice. The bookies should respect them more! Marseille have an edge in all areas of the game but not a significant one. They are having a disappointing season so far and only in 8th place in the French Ligue 1. They have taken just 29 points but their number of xPTS is bigger though. On the road they have been very poor – winning just one game in the Ligue 1. Their score difference away from home is also weak. Marseille can improve from their current level but the bookies seem to give this potential way too much emphasis.. The visitors have been in lame form recently – not winning in any of their last four matches. In their last game they lost to Lyon, currently in 15th place, as favourites on the betting market. Marseille were very disappointing – especially offensively. They recorded only one shot on goal and seemed to be low in confidence.  Moreover, Lyon generated much more in expected goals (xG) 1.45-0.26. Before this they faced Monaco at home as favourites and played okay. It was a 2-2 draw. Monaco performed below their normal level in this game. Marseille will face Metz after posting this preview.
