I do not very often recommend a bet on a clear favourite away from home, but I will make an exception here. Indeed, Inter have a massive edge over Torino in all areas of the game! In fact, Inter have been the best team in the Serie A so far this season in terms of expected points. They are also the best team in my power rating that reflects the teams’ pure class with the best possible lineup. I have raised their power rating even further from my in-depth preseason analysis. However, the difference compared to Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli is not substantial. Inter have taken 19 points so far and occupy the second place, behind their main rivals, AC Milan. They have not been lucky or unlucky in terms of expected points (xPTS). They have amazing firepower and have netted the ball 21 times in this league so far. This is clearly the biggest number in the Serie A. A player to watch very closely is Lautaro Martínez who is improving constantly and has ten league goals this campaign. Their defence has been amazingly solid, and they have conceded just five goals! I want to highlight that their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is only marginally bigger. Their defenders make hardly any silly mistakes, and the midfielders very actively take part in defending. They have won six of the eight Serie A games so far. Here I see them having a 64% chance of taking all three points. Odds of around 1.70-1.75 are widely available with the biggest bookies – at least at the time of writing this analysis late Friday evening Beijing time. In their last game they played a 2-2 draw against Bologna at home. It was a slightly disappointing performance – no denying that. However, I want to highlight that Bologna played a much better game than they usually do. Inter did have 62% ball possession and recorded many more goal attempts (14-8), shots on goal, total passes, completed passes, attack and dangerous attacks (60-18) but their offense somehow lacked creativity. Rather surprisingly, Bologna generated more in expected goals (xG) 1.12-0.92. Inter were heavily criticized in the football media after the game and I believe the bookies have reacted too heavily to this lame performance.

Before the game against Bologna Inter beat Benfica, a dangerous Portuguese team, 1-0 at home. They were clearly the better team on the pitch recording 21 goal attempts and a whopping 3.97 in xG – Benfica managed just 0.28. It could easily have been 3-0 or even 4-0. On the 30th of September they swept past Salernitana winning 4-0 away from home. What a fine performance it was! Torino have started the season pretty poorly and have clearly declined from last season when they played surprisingly well and finished in 10th place. However, many of their players play above their normal level throughout the season. They are in the 14th place at the moment and have only nine points to their account. They have not been marginally lucky in terms of xPTS. It is very hard to write anything positive about their offense which lacks individual skill, speed, passing accuracy at critical moments as well creativity in general. Their number of xG is 5.67. Their defence is not bad though and they have allowed nine goals in the Serie A. However, I do not expect them to be able to stop Inter’s stars here. I expect the pressure to become too much for their defence to handle in the second half at the latest. Torino’s defence has a good structure but Inter’s strikers, for example Marcus Thuram, have amazing individual talent.. Torino did not have much of a chance in their latest game and last 0-2 to Juventus away from home. They generated just 0.65 in xG – Juve’s number was 2.45. Before this they played a boring and low-level game against Verona at home as very clear favourites according to the bookies. It was, however, a goalless draw where Torino recorded just 0.48 in xG.
