Crucial game for relegation.

AIK, one of the best teams in the league and a classic from the Allsvenskan, is now in trouble. They are 15th with 22 points, one below safe zone and with a very difficult calendar upcoming: after this match they’ll play against Djurgarden (4th), Hacken (3rd), Mjallby away and Elfsborg (2nd). So this is an absolute must win for them.

Two months ago it looked clear that AIK was going to leave the relegation zone, but they have lost two of the last three games and now are again in the danger zone. This international break has been good for them to clean their minds and recover energies.

They have signed some interesting players in the summer transfer market, and now all the squad is available except John Guidetti who is injured.

New manager Henning Berg has not managed to pick up the points as the club would have hoped since taking over in July. They have pressure to win this match but I believe they’ll do it. They have started pretty well in their last games, very strong with high pressure and chances. But are lacking confidence lately so are struggling against teams who give them a fast reply, like Hammarby.

On the other hand, Degerfors surprisingly beat title-chasing Hacken two weeks ago (who was focused in the Europa League games). Degerfors are desperately trying to stay up and they have won three of their last five league games. Their away form is a cause for concern, they have lost eight of their ten away league games this season and are the worst away team in the Allsvenskan.

Degerfors have a serious problem at the back, with 47 goals conceded in 22 games, the second worst defense of the league after bottom Varberg. They have a weak squad whose value is just 7.85MM Euros (AIK’s value is 17.5MM Euros), and are clear relegation contenders.

Their plan for this game will be to use a 5-3-2 and park the bus, but this won’t be successful as they have showed during the whole season that are not able to keep the goal to nil, especially away: they did it only one time, in the lucky victory 0:1 against Varnamo where won 0:1 scoring at 94 wit just 0.39 expected goals (xG) and conceding 1.42 xG.

This is a very important match for both teams, a six-points game, but AIK is clearly the favorite in my opinion. They have much more quality and shouldn’t be in the relegation zone. They have been in the TOP5 lately (5th in 2022, 2nd in 2021, 4th in 2019, 1st in 2018) and would be a big shock to see them relegated to the Superettan.

Guests are terrible travelers and will struggle against a strong team like AIK. However, if AIK Solna can’t take the lead the crowd is likely to grow impatient. It will be a nervous game for both sides but AIK Solna are favorites for me.
