Something clicked in Stuttgart. I can’t put a finger on what exactly the reason is for their improvement, as it often is the case, it has to be a complex of reasons.

Only a few weeks ago I was calling to go against Matarazzo as it seemed he’d not be able to turn this sinking ship around and avoid relegation. The last 3 games, however, have made me reconsider my view on the club’s prospects.

They were exceptionally strong in the 3-2 home win against collapsing Borussia M'gladbach. Despite conceding 2 fluke goals and going 1-2 down into half-time, the team showed great character and precision to fight their way back to what could be a turning point win.

One of Bundesliga’s best strikers from 2020/21 season (16 goals + 6 assists) Kalajdzac is finally back to full fitness for Stuttgart and if to speak of the reasons for their improvement he is definitely making the list. The 24 year old 2 meter tall center-forward has been limited to just 7 starts in this campaign and even so has contributed with 2 goals and 2 assists. An absolutely key figure for the team, who elevates them greatly.

Stuttgart has actually been scoring for 5 Bundsliga consecutive games now, finding the net against the likes of in-form Bochum, Hoffenheim and Bayer (twice, on the road). They are also a team, which is highly rated on the market by syndicates - money have been going their way for more than a month now, evidently they are sitting lower in the table than their tactical data suggests, hence the popularity with people behind the big market moves.

Union Berlin lost a key figure in winter, Kruse, to Wolfsburg. And since then things have derailed for the capital city club. It would not be an understatement to say they flew up higher than their squad quality or gameplay deserved. Union is a typical hard-working side that finds success through discipline and 100% commitment. It has not been enough in 2022, though, as their offensive compartment has stopped creating or scoring. They’ve found the net in only 1 (!) of their last 5 Bundesliga fixtures, failing to score against defensively disorganized Wolfsburg, Arminia and Augsburg.

In this stage of the season the momentum is definitely at Stuttgart’s end and I call for them to take advantage of Union’s poor form with either an away win or at least a draw.
