CELTA - PAOK

I see here a scenario that clearly favours Celta. The first leg in Thessaloniki was already a statement. Winning 1-2 at Toumba, in a stadium where nobody had won for over a year, says a lot about the personality this team is building under Claudio Giráldez. Celta managed very well the tempo, suffered when needed and punished PAOK in key moments.

Now the tie moves to Vigo, and the context around PAOK does not look encouraging for them. Razvan Lucescu arrives without recovering any of his injured players. The list of absentees is heavy and, more importantly, full of starters: Konstantelias, Despodov, Pelkas, Meïté, Lovren, Pavlenka, Tyson and Ivanesuc. On top of that, Zivkovic is suspended. We are speaking about eight regulars unavailable for a must-win European away game. That is not a minor detail.

Yes, they recover Giakoumakis, their reference up front and top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions. He already scored in Balaídos earlier this season and is clearly their main threat. But football is not only about one striker. Without their creative midfielders and natural wingers, PAOK lose a lot of unpredictability between the lines. Konstantelias is their most talented player, the one who links midfield and attack. Without him, their game becomes much more direct and easier to read.

There is also a very clear pattern in PAOK’s season. At home, they are strong, aggressive, almost overwhelming. Away from Thessaloniki, they are a different team. In ten domestic away matches, they have five wins, three draws and two defeats. In Europe, their numbers show instability: two wins, one draw and three defeats. They often score first, but they also concede and suffer when the opponent increases intensity. They are brave, sometimes too brave.

Tactically, Lucescu likes to keep an offensive approach even away from home. The problem for him is that this time he must attack, because the 1-2 forces PAOK to win in Vigo. And that can play directly into Celta’s hands. This Celta feels very comfortable when there are spaces to run into. With players like Swedberg, Hugo Álvarez or even Aspas attacking the channels, transitions can be lethal.

On Celta’s side, there is calm but no relaxation. Pablo Durán is the only confirmed absence. The group is healthy, confident and coming from a very positive week. Balaídos will push, and that matters. The team has already beaten PAOK at home this season, 3-1, and that psychological advantage is there.

I also think the key will be emotional control. In the first legs of these play-offs, most away teams won. It shows that nothing is decided until the final whistle. Celta must not defend too deep. If they try only to protect the 1-2, they could suffer. The best version of this team appears when they are proactive, when they press after losing the ball and attack with courage.

For me, the scenario is clear: PAOK will start intense, trying to score early. If Celta survive that first wave and impose their rhythm, the tie should tilt definitively towards the Galician side. With fewer resources, more pressure and a stadium pushing against them, I struggle to see PAOK holding 90 minutes at a high level.

Everything points to a European night where Celta confirm their growth and take advantage of a rival weakened by absences and by their own away inconsistencies.

NOTTINGHAM - FENERBAHCE

Under Vitor Pereira, Forest showed personality, control and tactical clarity from the first minute in Istambul, and managed a solid 0-3 win. Now, back at the City Ground, with that cushion behind them, I expect them to finish the job properly.

In the first leg, Forest dominated every phase of the game. The pressing was aggressive but organised, the midfield distances were compact, and the transitions were sharp. Murillo stepping forward with confidence, Igor Jesus attacking the box with conviction, and Morgan Gibbs-White operating between the lines made Fenerbahce look slow and reactive. It was one of the most complete European away performances I’ve seen from Forest in decades.

Of course, the Liverpool defeat at the weekend hurt. Conceding in the 97th minute always leaves a scar, especially when you feel you controlled large parts of the match. But if I analyse it calmly, I actually saw positive signs: first, the structure under Pereira is clearer. The pressing triggers are more coordinated. Secondly, the team looks braver in possession. What they lacked was efficiency in the final third, not control.

Now they return to Europe, and this competition has brought out the best in Forest this season. The numbers say it clearly: they score more, they create better chances and they look freer in their attacking patterns. Igor Jesus, joint-top scorer in the competition, looks far more decisive in this environment. He attacks space quicker, shoots earlier and plays with instinct.

On the other side, Fenerbahce arrive with serious problems. Injuries to key players like Milan Skriniar, Caglar Soyuncu, Anderson Talisca and Ederson have left them extremely weakened, especially defensively. They may even be forced to start a third-choice goalkeeper and a 21-year-old centre-back as their only natural option in that position. At this level, that is a huge handicap.

Tactically, they have no choice but to take risks. They are three goals down. That means pushing their full-backs higher, committing more bodies forward and leaving spaces behind. Against a team like Forest, who are very comfortable attacking transitions, that is dangerous. Gibbs-White and Hudson-Odoi thrive when there is space to run into. If Fenerbahce overcommit, they will suffer.

The key for Forest is mentality. Pereira has spoken about avoiding complacency, and I agree completely. A 3-0 lead can be tricky if you start thinking the job is already done. But I don’t see that happening. This manager has arrived with authority, and the players look switched on.

Even if he rotates two or three positions to manage fatigue, the structure will remain the same: compact midfield, aggressive counter-press, fast vertical attacks. And at home, with the City Ground pushing them on, I expect Forest to impose themselves again. Forest were better in Istanbul, and with Fenerbahce’s defensive crisis, I believe they will be better again here.
