ALAVES - GETAFE
Alavés arrive here after a very demanding midweek Cup match, played with starters, and emotionally that always leaves a mark. Yes, they have won two league games in a row, but for a team built to survive, asking for a third consecutive win feels like stretching reality a bit too much.
Alavés are competitive, nobody can deny that. They fight, they run, they make life uncomfortable for any rival. But quality-wise, this is still one of the weakest squads in the league, and their biggest issue has been evident all season: goals.
That problem has only grown since the departure of Carlos Vicente, their top scorer with five goals, sold to Birmingham. Losing your most decisive attacking player in January, without a real replacement, is a heavy blow. The arrivals have been clearly depth signings, players like Denis Suárez or Ángel Pérez coming in as rotation options, while others such as Diabaté are injured. None of that solves the core issue. Without Vicente, this team looks even more limited in the final third.
I also feel that Alavés now play with slightly less pressure. They know they have a small cushion, seven teams behind them and a three-point gap to the relegation zone. That doesn’t mean they will relax, but psychologically it matters. In games like this, against a direct rival, a draw is not a bad outcome for them at all, especially at home.
On the other side, I see a Getafe team that is much more intense and competitive than recent results might suggest. Under José Bordalás, this side is always the same in terms of identity. Aggressive without the ball, extremely organised, emotionally strong and very uncomfortable to face. They are coming from matches where they deserved more, like the draw in Girona, conceding in the very last action, or the narrow 0-1 defeat against Valencia with a late goal conceded. Those are the kind of games that usually balance out over time.
One key factor for me is where the match is played, but also how Getafe behave depending on the venue. Away from home is actually where they execute their plan better. High pressing, lots of duels, constant interruptions, and a rhythm that nobody enjoys. That explains why they are one of the worst home teams in the league but a much more respectable traveller. When they don’t have to take initiative, they become far more dangerous.
Getafe also lack goals, that is obvious, and Bordalás himself has admitted it openly. But the difference is that they fully accept this limitation and build their game around it. They are specialists in killing matches, turning them into boring, tight affairs with almost no chances on either side. They wait, patiently, for a mistake or a set piece. And there, they are very strong. With players like Luis Milla delivering dead balls, they always carry some threat without needing to dominate.
The January window has also given them a small boost. Luis Vázquez already scored on his debut, Zaid Romero adds defensive depth, and the squad feels a bit more complete, even if still limited. Mentally, I sense a Getafe team that understands perfectly what this game requires. Bordalás’ message has been clear all week: there is no margin for error, and they need to compete at the highest level.
For me, this has all the ingredients of a very tight match. Few chances, a lot of duels, long phases without rhythm, and moments where intensity will decide more than talent. Alavés will try to protect themselves, Getafe will raise the physical level, and in that scenario, I trust the visitors to feel more comfortable. I wouldn’t expect many goals, but I do expect Getafe to impose their character and competitiveness in a game where details will be everything.
LIVERPOOL - MANCHESTER CITY
The atmosphere will be huge, as always, but context matters, and this season Liverpool simply haven’t been reliable enough to fully trust them, even at home. Liverpool started the campaign brilliantly, five wins from five, flying, full of confidence. Since then, the season has been defined by inconsistency. They’ve only lost once in their last twelve league games, which sounds good on paper, but when you dig deeper and see they’ve dropped 15 points from a possible 36, the picture changes. Too many draws, too many games where they looked flat or unsure. A draw at Anfield against teams like Burnley is damaging, even if it doesn’t feel dramatic in the moment. Confidence has clearly taken a hit, and you can sense that hesitation in their play.
Arne Slot is also dealing with a difficult injury situation. Key absences have forced compromises, especially in defence. When you are talking about playing Manchester City and you’re moving players out of position, like using Szoboszlai as a right-back, you are already giving Guardiola problems to solve. Liverpool still have talent, of course, but they don’t feel settled. Salah is not at his usual level, Gakpo looks far from last season’s form, and while Ekitike and Wirtz bring excitement, they are still building chemistry in a team that lacks stability.
On the other side, Manchester City arrive with urgency. Manchester City are second, six points behind Arsenal, and with Arsenal expected to win their game, there is simply no margin left. A draw at Anfield used to be a good result. Now, it’s not enough. Guardiola knows that, and City’s approach will reflect it, even if it doesn’t mean reckless attacking.
City’s form hasn’t been perfect either. Letting a two-goal lead slip against Tottenham was worrying, and injuries are piling up. Missing players like Doku, Gvardiol, Stones or Kovacic hurts, and there are doubts around Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias. But what I do like about City is how they responded. Three days after that Spurs draw, they went and beat Newcastle 3-1 and booked a cup final spot. That tells me the mentality is still there.
The January window has also shifted things. The arrival of Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo has added freshness and intensity. Guehi, in particular, feels like a statement signing. Strong, aggressive, comfortable defending space, exactly the kind of defender you want in games like this. His duel with Ekitike could be decisive. City are still not perfect defensively, but they are better equipped now than earlier in the season.
Tactically, I expect Guardiola to be clever rather than dominant. He’ll want to slow the game early, take the sting out of Anfield with possession, and force Liverpool to defend for long stretches. Newcastle showed in the first half last weekend that Liverpool can be unsettled with aggressive pressing and quick combinations. City can do that, but with more control and better decision-making.
I also think City have more players who can decide games in small moments. Even if Haaland is not at his peak, there is Cherki, Semenyo, Nico González, players who can exploit spaces when Liverpool lose structure. And those moments will come, because Liverpool this season always give something away.
For me, this game feels tight, intense, and emotionally charged, but not one-sided. With what is at stake for City, and given Liverpool’s fragility, I see guests leaving Anfield with something important.
Alaves - getafe
