ELVERSBERG - HERTHA BERLIN
For me, Hertha are individually the best team in the league after Hannover. Squad quality-wise, they are far above what their current position suggests. The problem hasn’t been performance, it’s been reward. Over the last weeks, they’ve played some very strong matches and still walked away with draws. The 2–2 against Darmstadt last weekend is the perfect example. Hertha were excellent for long stretches against one of the top teams in the league, controlled phases of the game, created chances, and still didn’t win. That’s been the story of their season.
One key point with Hertha is how they perform away from home. They are, in my opinion, the best away team to watch in this league. In fact, they look more comfortable on the road than in Berlin. When they have space to attack and face opponents who want to play football, Hertha are at their best. Players like Reese, Brekalo or Cuisance benefit massively from open games, and that’s exactly the scenario I expect here.
Elversberg are a very good footballing side, well coached and brave with the ball. Vincent Wagner has done an outstanding job, no doubt. But lately, I’ve seen some defensive cracks. They are conceding more chances and I really struggle to see them keeping a clean sheet against a Hertha side with this level of individual quality. Elversberg have also been overperforming in relation to their squad. Let’s be honest: this is a very average group of players whose original goal was simply to stay up. Being in the promotion places is an incredible achievement, but sustaining it over a full season is another story.
Tactically, I expect a very open and entertaining game, played at a high technical level. Elversberg won’t sit back at home, and that plays into Hertha’s hands. Hertha’s issue this season hasn’t been creating chances, it’s been killing games. Even so, they rarely lose, and that five-game draw streak shows how difficult they are to beat, even when things don’t go perfectly.
I also don’t put too much weight on the head-to-head record here. Yes, Elversberg have won several league meetings, but the DFB-Pokal tie earlier this season, where Hertha won 3–0, showed clearly that when Hertha get their transitions right, they can hurt Elversberg badly. This matchup is much closer than the table suggests.
Elversberg are under pressure now. Being second brings expectations, and every home game becomes a must-win in the promotion race. Hertha, on the other hand, arrive with a certain freedom. They know they’ve been playing well, they know they are competitive against the best, and they don’t need to force the game.
I see this as a match where Hertha’s weapons fit the scenario perfectly. Open spaces, an opponent who wants to dominate, and enough quality to punish defensive mistakes. Elversberg are a good side, but not one that should be trusted to control this game from start to finish. For me, Hertha are very live in this spot. They are good enough to win it, and solid enough not to lose it.
SOUTHAMPTON - WATFORD
Southampton, although having one of the best squads in the league and being among the main promotion contenders (like all newly promoted sides), have been frustratingly inconsistent this season, but over the last few weeks I feel something has shifted. Since Tonda Eckert arrived, the team looks way better, more disciplined without the ball, and clearer in their ideas. The win away at Stoke was a very good performance - they were organised, patient and ruthless when the chances came.
At home, St Mary’s has been reasonably solid. It hasn’t been a fortress, but it’s a ground where Southampton usually look like the better team, especially against sides who arrive with doubts. Six wins, five draws and only three defeats at home is a respectable return for a team that has underachieved overall. The balance between scoring and conceding is also improving, and defensively they look far more reliable than they did earlier in the campaign.
Watford, on the other hand, arrive in a very fragile moment. The resignation of Javi Gracia has left the club in yet another period of uncertainty, and even if the players are trying to stay professional under interim management, instability always shows on the pitch. You can see it in their results: no wins in the last five league games, too many draws, and a complete lack of attacking threat away from home. Three away wins all season is simply not good enough for a team with playoff ambitions.
Watford are heavily dependent on their home form. At Vicarage Road have won almost double of their away points, and their performances as visitors often lack intensity and conviction. Even when they are organised, they struggle to sustain pressure high up the pitch, and their offensive output has dropped sharply in recent weeks. Too often they fail to push opponents back, spending long phases defending deep without posing any real danger.
I expect Southampton to control large spells of this game. Eckert has clearly prioritised defensive balance, with a solid double pivot in midfield and full-backs who choose their moments carefully. That structure should limit Watford’s transitions, which is one of the few areas where the visitors can still be dangerous. If Southampton manage the tempo properly, Watford will be forced into long periods without the ball, something they have struggled with away from home.
The sense that Southampton is slowly moving in the right direction matters, especially in a Championship season where confidence swings are decisive. Watford, by contrast, feel like a club waiting for answers, not providing them.
I don’t expect a high-scoring game. This feels like one of those matches decided by small margins, by concentration levels and by who believes more in what they’re doing. Right now, Southampton look like a team with a plan, while Watford look like a team surviving day to day.
