I am going against Liverpool again, last time were unlucky with the late and unnecessary goal vs Barnsley. A few words in general first:
Liverpool’s 4–1 FA Cup win over League One Barnsley on Monday followed a pattern that had already been developing. Before kick-off, top-flight sides had faced lower-league opposition ten times across competitions, producing an aggregate record of eight wins, one draw and one defeat, with a combined scoreline of 40–10. Notably, only one of those matches ended in a clean sheet for the Premier League clubs.
That single defeat was seismic: holders Crystal Palace being knocked out by sixth-tier Macclesfield, a result widely labelled the most astonishing upset in the FA Cup’s 154-year history. With that embarrassment fresh in the collective memory, there was little danger of complacency from Liverpool. If nothing else, it sharpened focus.
Defensively, concerns were obvious. Liverpool’s issues at the back have been a season-long theme, and the injury to Conor Bradley suffered the previous midweek only added to that vulnerability. Going forward, though, there was never much doubt they would create enough to overwhelm third-tier opposition. In the league Liverpool has conceded already 28 goals, and it is in line with the expected goals. Arsenal for example have only conceded 14.
For Barnsley, the occasion was immense. Around 6,000 supporters made the trip on a working day, an extraordinary commitment from a club representing a community often described as economically marginalised. That level of sacrifice inevitably demands total effort on the pitch. The Tykes believed set pieces could be their route into the game, a theory supported by how frequently Liverpool have been exposed in those situations this season—and it was hard to argue against that logic.
In practice, the game unfolded largely as expected. Barnsley capitalised on a defensive gift, underlining once again Liverpool’s fragility, and on another day might have added a second.
Burnley are not good, but they do have a chance, and they have drawn 3 out of their last 6 matches. Perhaps with the help of some luck, but look at the odds!
Burnley had already dismantled Championship pace-setters Millwall 5–1 earlier in the week, following a four-goal haul against Manchester United. They arrived well-rested and suddenly prolific: seven goals across two matches, having managed only six in their previous eight outings combined. That earlier run still included goals scored away at Brentford and Newcastle in defeat, and a similar outcome looked very much on the cards again.
