All teams miss players due African games. Christmas time is often a time for surprises, and my choice of surprise this time is bigger wins. Even one of these wins makes a good profit overall! My biggest idea would be Everton, despite the absentees, but because of form, performances and coaching!

Brentford v Bournemouth

Brentford won their most recent away match against bottom-of-the-table Wolves, ultimately deservedly, by 2–0, even though the game remained evenly balanced for a long time. Bournemouth had to settle for a 1–1 draw at home against Burnley, despite dominating the flow of play with a performance that would have justified a clear victory. The visitors’ overall level of performance has declined as the season has progressed to the point where they are now only marginally ahead of Brentford in the power rankings. Home advantage is enough to justify Brentford’s status as the slight favourite.

Burnley – Everton

Burnley managed to fight back to a 1–1 draw away at Bournemouth, scoring from one of their few chances in the match. The return of centre-back Maxime Estève, who missed the game, would be more than welcome. Everton suffered an expected 0–1 home defeat against Arsenal and were unable to threaten the league leaders with their attacking play. The absences of Iliman Ndiaye, Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, and Idrissa Gueye are a significant blow. Although the difference in baseline quality favours Everton, Saturday’s match at Turf Moor could still prove a demanding task for them. It could, but I do not think it will!

Chelsea – Aston Villa

Chelsea managed to claw their way back to a 2–2 draw away at Newcastle last time out, despite being badly outplayed in the first half. Their fluctuating performances from match to match may reflect a lack of leadership within a young squad. Aston Villa’s winning streak continued with a 2–1 home victory over Manchester United, their tenth consecutive win. The impressive run has included some fortunate results, but the performance against United fully matched the final scoreline. Chelsea should still be regarded as the stronger side in terms of baseline quality and, at home, a justified pre-match favourite.
