For me, the hinge of this game is simple: who imposes the match tempo. Kosovo at home under Foda are energetic, vertical and emotional; Slovenia under Kek are pragmatic, compact and very good at taking the air out of a stadium. When I watch Kosovo’s 2–0 v Sweden back, the pattern is clear—compact blocks, Muriqi as the wall to bounce into, and Zhegrova/Rashica attacking the first space outside the full-back. It’s dangerous when the game becomes stretched. But this opponent won’t let it breathe. Kek’s sides live for nights like this, where it’s about concentration, distances and small advantages in both boxes.
Personnel tilts some details. Without Rrahmani the entire defensive hierarchy of Kosovo changes. You can cover structure with coaching, but you can’t magic up his timing in the box or his command on set-plays. Hajdari is an exciting profile and could be a long-term win for them, but this is a baptism against a very savvy Slovenia forward line. I expect Kek to target that channel with early diagonals towards Šeško and then play off second balls with Lovrić crashing from the half-space. If Šeško drifts onto the stand-in centre-back and pins him, Slovenia can hold attacks in the final third and make Kosovo defend, not run.
Out wide, the duel map is fascinating. Karničnik v Rashica is pure concentration: Rashica wants the outside-to-inside diagonal to his right foot; Karničnik is disciplined at showing the line and then recovering to block the cut-back. The bigger issue for Slovenia is Zhegrova on Janža—Edon is the one who can unpick set defences. That’s where the cover from Čerin becomes vital, doubling to stop the carry and forcing Zhegrova to release early. If Slovenia can funnel those 1v1s into harmless crosses, Oblak does the rest. And honestly, Jan Oblak’s leadership matters here as much as his saves. Slovenia were stung by Switzerland’s restart routines; this week they’ve spoken openly about cleaning ABP details. Oblak’s voice resets that line when the stadium gets noisy.
On the other side of the ball, Bijol’s battle with Muriqi is the game inside the game. Muriqi is elite at making fouls out of thin air and winning territory, then Kosovo build from the second phase or a Rexhbecaj dead ball. Bijol has to be aggressive without being naïve; step in front when the service is flat, hold when the cross is coming, and above all don’t give cheap free-kicks around the D. With Drkušić sweeping and Stojanović tucking in on the far side, Slovenia can keep three behind the ball and remove the chaos that feeds the Dardans.
Form matters too. There was recency bias after Basel, but Slovenia’s underlying is better than the table shows, and Šeško finding rhythm again changes everything—he stretches you, he scares centre-backs into retreating two metres, and that unlocks Lovrić and Elšnik to arrive. Kosovo’s home run is real, the atmosphere in Pristina isn’t for tourists, and with Muriqi/Zhegrova fit they will have moments. But Kek is built for “control games” rather than German-tempo exchanges; his 2020 blueprint versus Kosovo still reads well today: compact 4-4-2 out of possession, patience in circulation, and punish the one mistake.
If Slovenia manage the first quarter-hour, reduce the game to restarts and field position, and avoid giving Kosovo the first punch, the tie plays to their experience and their goalkeeper’s authority.
