VILLARREAL - GIRONA
Villarreal and Girona promise an entertaining clash, one of those games where attacking football tends to take centre stage. Both sides are naturally inclined to go forward, with plenty of pace and creativity, but their defensive weaknesses often leave them exposed. On paper it looks like a perfect scenario for Villarreal, who have built a squad this season that is not only deep and talented, but also much more balanced than in previous years.
The Yellow Submarine have worked seriously in the transfer market, adding players of Champions League calibre to strengthen a team that already had quality. Last season’s big weakness, their defensive line, has been upgraded with the arrival of Renato Veiga, Mouriño and the recovery of Foyth. Those signings provide structure and reliability to a backline that last year conceded too many goals through errors and lapses in concentration. In their opening league game against Oviedo, Villarreal still showed a flash of those old problems with a clumsy penalty given away, but the overall impression was of a side far more in control, capable of dictating rhythm and knowing when to accelerate or slow down a game.
In attack, the options are plentiful. Etta Eyong has burst onto the scene as one of the revelations of the season, a player who brings freshness, unpredictability and an eye for goal. Around him, Marcelino can count on players like Buchanan, Pepe and Yeremy Pino to stretch defences and exploit spaces. Even with absentees such as Gerard, Ayoze, Costa or Kambwala, Villarreal’s bench remains full of alternatives, a luxury that not many teams in LaLiga can afford. The impression is of a squad built to compete week in, week out at the highest level, and one that should establish itself among the top four by the end of the campaign.
Girona, by contrast, arrive with plenty of doubts. The way they ended last season left concerns about their defensive fragility, and their first game this year only reinforced that impression. Their build-up play is too often risky, their goalkeeper Gazzaniga struggled badly, and to make things worse he is now suspended after his red card. That absence forces them to rely on the reserve keeper Krapyvtsov, an extra handicap for a team that already looks unsettled at the back. On top of that, the expected departure of Krejci obliges the coach to reorganise his system with three centre-backs, a change that inevitably brings more adjustments and instability in an area of the pitch where they already suffer.
What Girona do have is attacking intent and energy, but their eagerness to go forward leaves them open behind. Rayo Vallecano showed in the first round how pressing high against Girona can force errors, with goals and chances coming from losses near their own box. Villarreal have the players and the pressing intensity to exploit that same weakness. The key will be the midfield, with figures like Pape Gueye setting the tone in pressing and ball recovery, allowing Villarreal’s attacking talents to capitalise on turnovers in dangerous zones.
Given the quality and depth of Villarreal’s squad, their improved defensive solidity, and Girona’s ongoing problems in their own half, everything points to a match where the Yellow Submarine can impose their style and come away with the upper hand. This is exactly the type of opponent and the type of game that fits Villarreal’s strengths, and they will know that these are the points they must secure if they are serious about being a Champions League team.
COMO - LAZIO
Como’s adventure continues to gather pace, and they welcome Lazio for the opening round of the Serie A season in what feels like a symbolic clash of two very different projects. On one side, a wealthy and ambitious Como, backed by the vision of Cesc Fàbregas and owners unafraid to invest heavily. On the other, a Lazio side led again by Maurizio Sarri, burdened by a transfer embargo and forced to recycle a group that stumbled badly last spring.
The mood in Como is one of excitement. Last season’s 10th-place finish after a two-decade absence already exceeded expectations, but the six consecutive wins that closed out the campaign suggested momentum was building. Fàbregas now has a deeper and more dangerous squad at his disposal: Morata’s arrival is the headline, but equally important are the likes of Jesús Rodríguez, Jacobo Ramon and Martin Baturina, players who add flair and versatility. Pre-season offered plenty of encouragement with wins over Lille, Ajax and Betis, though the 5–0 against Barcelona served as a reminder of the gap to Europe’s elite. The Coppa Italia opener against Südtirol, a 3–1 victory, was another sign of maturity: even when tested, the team carried enough quality and attacking purpose to finish the job.
Fàbregas has options now, something that wasn’t always the case last autumn. Douvikas, fresh from his brace in the cup, presses Morata for the starting role up front. Diao remains a crucial weapon from wide areas, with his direct running and eye for goal, while young Nico Paz offers creativity between the lines. The real change, though, is depth: where last season Como could look fragile when forced to rotate, now there is competition in most areas. The defence, marshalled by Kempf and supported by Van der Brempt and Valle, will be tested by Lazio’s wide players, but it looks more solid than a year ago.
For Lazio, this trip north comes at an awkward time. Sarri is back in the dugout after a messy exit in 2024, and although his experience is unquestionable, he faces the season with virtually the same squad that collapsed in the final stretch last year. The embargo has left them unable to strengthen meaningfully, and Romagnoli’s suspension plus injuries to Gigot and Patric leave the back line vulnerable. Gila and Provstgaard may form the core of a patched-up defence, with Nuno Tavares expected to provide thrust down the left but also carrying defensive responsibilities.
The Biancocelesti still possess talent in attack — Castellanos, Zaccagni and Cancellieri can trouble anyone on their day — but they will need service. Rovella’s control and Guendouzi’s work rate become vital in midfield battles. Yet compared with Como’s new combinations, Lazio look short of inspiration, and their pre-season, though steady, did little to dispel doubts about their ceiling.
This match also carries a personal subplot: Sarri, the master tactician, against Fàbregas, once his player and now an apprentice with bold ideas of his own. Last year Lazio crushed Como 5–1 at this very ground, but the January 1–1 in Rome reflected how far the Lariani had come. Now, with confidence, investment and a passionate home crowd behind them, Como will believe they can finally flip the script.
Tactically, the battle in midfield will be decisive. If Baturina and Perrone can establish rhythm and connect with Paz and Diao, Como will dominate territory and chances. Lazio’s hope lies in transitions, exploiting Castellanos’ runs behind and Zaccagni’s intelligence on the left. But Sarri’s defence, missing key pillars, could find Morata’s presence and Douvikas’ energy difficult to contain.
It feels like a defining early marker: Como eager to prove they are no longer Serie A’s newcomers but genuine European contenders, Lazio fighting to avoid slipping further behind Italy’s elite. On balance, Como’s strength at home and the freshness of their project suggest they are better placed to avoid defeat, and perhaps claim a historic win over their Roman visitors.
