JEJU - SEOUL
This match between Jeju United and FC Seoul feels like one of those turning-point games, especially for the hosts. Jeju have finally started to show signs of life after a rough stretch, and that 2-0 win over Anyang last weekend couldn’t have come at a better moment. They looked more fluid, more confident, and you could see they were playing with more freedom. The possession numbers said a lot — over 65% — and they didn’t just keep the ball, they did something with it.
New transfer Pedrinho was excellent, two assists in just 25 mins in his first real impact performance, and Park Dong-jin is starting to give them that bit of physical presence up front they’ve been missing. The midfield worked well too, especially with Lee Chang-min stepping back in. He went off with cramps, but he’s expected to be fine. The only issue for Jeju is the suspension of Nam Tae-hee, who’s been key in controlling the tempo. Without him, they might need to shift things around — maybe push Italo deeper or play Pedrinho more centrally — but the feeling is they’ll still have enough to cause problems.
FC Seoul come into this off a solid win of their own, beating Ulsan 1-0 thanks to a cracking goal from Lingard. It wasn’t their best performance overall — they had less of the ball and didn’t create too much — but they defended well and stayed compact, like they’ve done in most of their better games under Kim Gi-dong. The problem for them now is the two suspensions at the back: Kim Ju-sung and Kim Jin-su both out, and those are two of the most consistent players in their defensive setup.
That’s going to hurt, especially against a Jeju side that tends to push high and attack the flanks. Without Jin-su on the left, Seoul could struggle to deal with overlapping runs and crosses from that side. And if Lingard doesn’t get much service or space to counter, they might be forced to play more defensively than they’d like.
Jeju already beat Seoul twice this season — 3-1 and 2-0 — and both times they looked like the more dynamic team. Maybe that gives them a mental edge too. Their pressing worked well in those matches, and Seoul didn’t really have answers in midfield. This game could be tighter, especially with Seoul’s recent form improving, but with home advantage, fresher legs, and that attacking spark starting to return, Jeju have every reason to believe they can get something again here.
A draw wouldn’t be a bad result for either side, but Jeju will fancy their chances of taking more, especially if they start well and keep the pressure high. Seoul still have Lingard, and he only needs one moment, but they’re walking into a tricky one without two of their best defenders.
JEONBUK - GANGWON
Few teams in the K League feel as inevitable right now as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Whether they fall behind early, deal with absences, or have to rotate their lineup, they just keep finding a way to win. And as they welcome Gangwon FC this week, there's very little to suggest that momentum is about to break. With 18 matches unbeaten and counting, Gus Poyet’s men are playing with the confidence and ruthlessness of champions-in-waiting.
Their most recent outing — a wild 3-2 comeback away to Pohang — showed once again why Jeonbuk are at the top. They looked in trouble going into half-time, two goals down and struggling for rhythm. But that second half was textbook Jeonbuk: aggressive, vertical football, backed by depth off the bench and big performances in key moments. Lee Seung-woo got them rolling, Tiago Orobo equalised before heading off suspended, and then fortune smiled with a late own goal to seal the comeback. It's not just the result — it’s the belief they play with, the way they carry games forward even when behind.
Yes, they’ll miss Orobo this time, and Han Kook-young remains out injured, but it feels almost secondary. The spine of the team is solid, and the addition of Kim Young-bin, formerly of Gangwon, only strengthens a defence that’s already been hard to break down. And playing at home, where they’ve drawn near-record crowds this season, Jeonbuk tend to play with extra fuel. There’s noise, energy, and the feeling that every game is a chance to push their dominance further.
Gangwon come in with some form of their own. The comeback against Daejeon Citizen last week — two goals in stoppage time — was dramatic, and showed they’re not short of heart. Mo Jae-hyeon and Kim Gun-hee stepped up in those final moments, and that attacking depth could be useful here. But for long stretches of that game, they were second best. Defensively, they allowed too many entries into their box, and their press was inconsistent. Against a team like Jeonbuk, that kind of vulnerability is likely to be punished far more severely.
Tactically, Gangwon will sit in and look to counter. They’ll try to frustrate Jeonbuk and use pace on the break, maybe through Vitor Gabriel, but that’s easier said than done. Jeonbuk’s pressing structure under Poyet has matured massively. Even when they lose the ball, they recover quickly, and they’re excellent at turning broken plays into chances. That puts huge strain on a visiting midfield like Gangwon’s, which lacks a true ball-winner and tends to get overrun against faster-paced opposition.
The head-to-head this season is split — Gangwon won the first match-up, but Jeonbuk responded with a dominant 3-0 in the reverse. That second game felt more like a true reflection of the gulf between them. If Gangwon are to have a chance, they’ll need to be perfect defensively and hope to nick something late. But Jeonbuk just don’t give up that kind of control too often, especially not at home, and especially not in this kind of form.
Everything points toward another Jeonbuk win — the form, the depth, the confidence, and the setting. Even without Tiago, they have more than enough in Lee Seung-woo, Song Min-kyu, and others to get it done. Gangwon might put up a fight, but this looks set to be win number 19 without defeat and the 15th victory this season for the hosts.
