PORTUGAL - NETHERLANDS

Portugal U21 have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament so far. Even though they lost their top striker Fabio Silva before the first game, they’ve looked sharp and well-balanced in every area. Scoring nine goals in four matches and keeping three clean sheets shows just how solid and confident they are as a group.

One of the big reasons for their success has been Quenda. The Chelsea-bound forward has been a real spark, scoring three times and setting up two more. But more than that, it’s the way he plays—stretching defences, taking players on, and creating chances in wide areas. Against a Dutch side that often shifts into a back three when attacking, he could find lots of space to run into and cause problems one-on-one.

Defensively, Portugal have been just as strong. Muniz and Lamba have built a reliable partnership in the middle, winning duels and staying organised. Behind them, goalkeeper Soares has been excellent—especially in the game against France where he made some crucial saves. This kind of defensive base gives them a huge advantage going into knockout games, just like England had when they won the last U21 tournament without conceding a goal.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, haven’t quite found their rhythm. They were perfect in qualifying but haven’t shown the same form in the tournament. They had to make big changes to beat Ukraine and already lost to Denmark earlier. Their defence, which was rock solid in qualifying, has looked vulnerable, conceding more goals in the group stage than in the entire qualifiers.

Noah Ohio was expected to be their main threat up front but hasn’t scored yet. Instead, it’s been Van Bergen and Valente keeping them in it. Valente, especially, has stood out, and his understanding with Van Bergen—his teammate at Groningen—will be important if they’re going to create anything against Portugal. But this will be their biggest test yet, facing a side that’s looked so confident both in defence and attack.

Portugal also have more variety in how they play. They can keep the ball, play through midfield with Fernandes and Bernardo controlling things, or go direct when needed. With the pace and quality of players like Quenda out wide, they can hit teams on the break too.

Right now, Portugal just look like a more complete and in-form team. They’re defending well, scoring freely, and playing with confidence. If the Dutch don’t find another level quickly, Portugal might just be too strong for them.

SPAIN - ENGLAND

Heavyweight clash in the Under-21 European Championship quarter-finals as Spain face England in what feels like a final too early. It’s a repeat of the 2023 final that England edged 1-0, and this new generation will try to write their own chapter in what’s become a quietly fierce rivalry at this level.

Spain arrive unbeaten, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing. Late goals against Slovakia and Romania kept their campaign alive, and their 1-1 draw against Italy was enough to top the group on goal difference. While they’ve shown resilience and depth despite missing a host of first-choice players like Cubarsí, Huijsen and Fermin Lopez, their vulnerability at the back has been noticeable. They’ve conceded in every match, and while they still play the typical Spanish style—possession-based and patient—they’ve yet to face an opponent with England’s speed and attacking threat.

England’s path has been far less convincing than last summer’s dominant title run, but there are reasons to believe this team is building something. A win, draw and a narrow loss to Germany in the group stage have left them second in Group B, and although they’ve only scored four goals, they’ve created plenty of chances. The concern is clearly the lack of clinical finishing. Against Germany they had 18 shots and controlled large spells of the match, but couldn’t convert dominance into goals.

This is where players like Hutchinson and Nwaneri become key. Hutchinson, especially, has looked dangerous when given minutes and could be a big factor from the start. Spain have looked exposed in transition and England’s pace out wide could make a difference. Stansfield, too, might finally get a full run out, offering a focal point they’ve missed in recent games. The midfield pairing of Scott and Anderson needs to control Spain’s creators, particularly Javi Guerra who keeps Spain ticking with his range of passing.

Defensively, England have shown signs of fragility, but Quansah and Cresswell remain solid central figures, and Beadle has made some important saves. Spain’s front line, built around Roberto Fernandez and wingers like Raul Moro, can be tricky, but haven’t been ruthless.

What makes this clash intriguing is that both sides have weaknesses the other can exploit. Spain can dominate the ball but have lacked sharpness in both boxes. England have pace and talent but haven’t been consistent. But knockout football has its own rhythm, and England have a psychological edge having not lost to Spain in their last five U21 meetings.

This could easily be a game of fine margins. Spain will try to wear England down with control and rhythm, but England can hurt them quickly if they get the transitions right. If they’re more efficient in front of goal than they have been, they’ll fancy their chances to at least push this one to extra time.
