HJK Helsinki VS FC Haka

HJK welcome Haka for this Veikkausliiga battle at Bolt Arena in Helsinki early Thursday morning Beijing time. Both teams have played 11 games, some teams have played 10 or 12 matches. This is the first tier of Finland but the level of this league is, as many of my fans are probably aware of, poor by European standards. However, football enthusiasts and us serious football bettors can expect a match of better than mediocre level by thus league's standards here! Most importantly, we have another very lucrative betting opportunity here! We have won four of the last five picks betting on Veikkausliiga. Yes, HJK are the richest and most successful club in Finland but their last season was a "circus". I have written about that many times before so I will not go into it in detail anymore but HJK finished in 3rd place - a huge disappointment by their standards.. They sacked Toni "Toke" Korkeakunnas after five games in May - having won only one of the first five matches. Yes, they have improved under the caretaker head coach, Miika Nuutinen. He is a promising but very inexperienced coach.. HJK will probably hire a more experienced head coach in the summer.. HJK have not fully convinced me even under Nuutinen.. Yes,  they have beaten small/ limited teams like Jaro, KTP as well as teams from the 2nd tier - JäPS 2-1 at home - and MP from 3rd tier 1-0 away from home. A few weeks ago they also beat a good team, SJK, 4-2 at home but SJK were missing several key players/ a few important players were not in the starting eleven. HJK were big favourites to win the game on the betting market. Neither Suomen Cup performance was good - even taking the squad rotation into account.  Against KuPS at home, on the 31st of May, it was a somewhat disappointing performance.. No goals were scored at Bolt Arena but KuPS, the underdogs in this game, came closer to taking all three points.. In their last game they beat AC Oulu, the rock-bottom team with five points, 4-0 on the road. Yes, they deserved to win but the final score does flatter them.. Oulu had a few good scoring chances early in the 2nd half when the score was still 0-1. HJK are currently in 4th place with 20 points in their pocket. They have scored 25 goals but their number of expected goals (xG) is "only" 21.75. They have conceded 10 goals but their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is 14.35. Yes, by pure class they are the best team in this league but only by a thin margin! A tough battle for the championship is expected!

It is true that HJK have not lost a game for a pretty long time and are of course the favourites here. However, they have now become too hot on the betting market.. However, the main rationale behind this pick is the fact that Haka are - once again - underrated by the bookies!  We will take the Haka +1.5 goals handicap option. Let's remember that  Haka played in the Championship Group at the end of the season! There were  - again - many changes in the squad after last season but mainly thanks to their very passionate and often underrated head coach, Andy Smith – the pretty straightforward tactics of Haka have been a positive surprise performance-wise this season! The players seem to be very committed and fight hard for every ball. According to my sources Haka have a very good team spirit at the moment. Haka are in 8th place in the standings with 12 points to their account and have a goal difference of 13:15. However, I want to emphasize they have been unlucky in terms of expected points (xPTS), xG and xGA They have not lost any of their last five matches – winning three of their five games! Moreover, Haka have lost only one of their last 17 games by a margin of more than one goal! In their last match, they were very clear underdogs against Inter in Turku but took a point after a 1-1 draw. Inter were strong in the 1st half but in the 2nd half Haka improved a lot, were energetic, and deserved to level the score. They could even have won the game.. Both teams recorded four shots on target but Inter did generate more in xG though.. Let's remember that Inter have not lost a single game in the Veikkausliiga this season..  Before this Haka defeated Gnistan 3-2 at home in a Suomen Cup clash. Haka were not at their best in the first half but were strong in the last 45 minutes – deserving to qualify for the next round. On the 31st of May they beat VPS from Vaasa, a team that finished in 5th place last season, 2-1 at home. Haka recorded more total shots (13-8), shots on goal, big scoring chances and also generated more in xG! It was a good performance from Haka as a whole.  Before this Haka crushed Union Plaani 6-0 at home in the Suomen Cup!
