Elfsborg host Hammarby in a clash between two teams firmly planted in the Allsvenskan title race, but coming into the game with very different dynamics. While the table tells us it’s third versus fourth, the eye test says Elfsborg are flying – and Hammarby are just trying to hang on.

Borås has become something of a fortress in recent weeks. Elfsborg have now won five matches on the bounce, scoring 16 goals in the process, including a 4-1 win away at Halmstad and an emphatic 4-0 demolition of Djurgården. That kind of form doesn’t happen by accident. There’s structure, confidence, and clinical finishing – with new arrival Fredrik Ihler particularly in the spotlight. The Danish forward has been on a tear, and he’s given Elfsborg the cutting edge they lacked earlier in the season.

What’s perhaps most impressive is that this run hasn’t come against weak opposition. Wins over Halmstad, Djurgården, and Brommapojkarna show that Elfsborg can handle a variety of game states: whether absorbing pressure or controlling tempo, they’re consistently delivering. At home, they’ve been nearly flawless, with five straight victories and a goal difference that underlines their attacking threat and defensive balance.

Hammarby, meanwhile, are in more uncertain territory. The narrow 1-0 win over a severely depleted Degerfors side didn’t exactly inspire confidence, especially coming on the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Mjällby. Before that, they had dropped points in three of four matches, and overall, their away form is notably less convincing than their performances at Tele2 Arena.

There are also concerns over key absences. Centre-back Pavle Vagic is suspended after starting every game so far under Kim Hellberg – a major blow for the defensive spine. His likely replacement, Fofana, is highly rated but raw, having logged just over 100 minutes this season. That inexperience could be exposed against one of the league’s most efficient attacking units. And while Besara remains the creative engine in midfield, Hammarby’s forward line isn’t firing at full capacity. Jusef Erabi’s fitness remains uncertain, and apart from Besara, there’s a lack of match-winning form up front.

Elfsborg have their own absentees, with Zeneli and Thomasen still out, and central defender Terry Yegbe doubtful. But the squad as a whole is in far better shape, both physically and in terms of form. Crucially, they’ve built momentum at the right time, and this match – just before the summer break – feels like the perfect opportunity to put another marker down in the title race.

Tactically, we can expect a tighter game than Elfsborg’s recent results might suggest. Hellberg’s Hammarby will likely look to sit compact, frustrate, and break in transitions through Besara and hopefully Marc Llinares or Saeid. But that’s a dangerous game to play against a side with Elfsborg’s current rhythm and confidence – especially with a weakened back line.

While a draw isn’t out of the question in what promises to be a physical, competitive encounter, Elfsborg clearly look the more complete team at this stage of the season. With home advantage and superior form, they are rightly considered slight favourites, and in a match that may be defined by a moment or two of quality, it’s hard not to lean toward the side with more players currently delivering in the final third.
