Gnistan and Ilves will meet twice this week, first in the Finnish Cup before their Veikkausliiga clash on the weekend. The first encounter will take place on Wednesday in the Cup, where Gnistan will face a tough opponent after having previously defeated JäPS’s reserve team in the last round. Ilves will begin their Cup journey only on Wednesday.

In the Veikkausliiga, Gnistan, coached by Jussi Leppälahti, has started the season fairly well. While it's unlikely anyone expected them to be in the medal race, they have also avoided serious relegation threats. On a good day, Gnistan's attacking style can challenge any opponent. Last weekend, they managed to get a draw against Jaro on a difficult pitch in Pietarsaari. This season, they’ve invested significantly in the squad, aiming for at least a top-half finish. Gnistan will be missing Roman Eremenko, Oliver Pettersson, Marcelo Costa, and possibly Vertti Hänninen, who was substituted out early in the last game against Jaro. However, Edmund Arko-Mensah will be available again after serving his suspension.

Eremenko is a huge miss, he has been the best player in the league alongside with Teemu Pukki, Alex Ring and Axel Kouame.

Ilves, who finished second in the Veikkausliiga last season, has had an inconsistent start to the 2025 season. They’ve struggled to find their attacking rhythm and, while they’ve generated the fifth-most expected goals, they’ve only managed a goalless draw at home against AC Oulu in their most recent match. Joonas Rantanen’s team will need to find more consistency as they look to challenge for the top spots. Ilves will be missing Otto Tiitinen, who has been making great progress this season; however, they should have their full squad available otherwise. Maksim Stjopin will miss the weekend match due to suspension, so he is expected to feature in the starting lineup for the Cup match on Wednesday.

Despite Ilves’ recent struggles, Wednesday's Cup match will likely be an exciting one. Gnistan’s aggressive pressing game will test Ilves’ ability to break down their defense with effective build-up play. Both teams may rotate players, but with both teams capable of playing attacking football, we can expect an entertaining match at Mustapekka Arena. Expect a few goals to be scored! Maybe 4?
