Djurgården, last season’s fourth-place finisher, will host reigning champions Malmö in the opening round of Allsvenskan on Saturday at 3Arena.

Djurgården has brought in Jani Honkavaara, the coach who led KuPS to the Finnish league title last season, as their new head coach. Last season, Djurgården finished fourth in Allsvenskan, narrowly missing out on a top-three spot by just one point behind Hammarby and AIK. They won 16 of their 30 matches, drew five, and lost nine, scoring 44 goals and conceding 35, earning a total of 53 points. Malmö ran away with the title, collecting a dominant 65 points.

Turkish striker Deniz Hümmet, who was sold to G-Osaka for €2.3 million in March, was Djurgården’s top scorer last season with 14 goals in 30 matches. Norwegian forward Tokmac Chol Nguen added six goals in 22 league appearances.

The club has seen some major departures, including goalkeeper Oscar Jansson (Häcken), defenders Warren Ngana (RB Leipzig) and David Tokpah (Utsikten), and midfielders Oskar Abrahamsson (IFK Stocksund), Theoharis Patjas (FC Arlanda), Besard Sabovic (Austin FC), and Gustav Wikheim (Nordsjaelland).

Djurgården has brought in Finnish talent, including defenders Adam Ståhl and Miro Tenho, midfielder Rasmus Schüller, and forward Santeri Haarala, who is on the cusp of the Finnish national team. A key signing is 17-year-old Matias Siltanen from KuPS, expected to be a future star for Finland’s national squad. A lot of Finns, and it is not given for granted that they are good enough, maybe Honkavaara trusts them too much, and DIF too much in Honkavaara. We will see, I have my doubts.

Other notable reinforcements include midfielder Hampus Finndell (Viking), who returns to the club after two seasons, and strikers Nino Zugelj (Bodø/Glimt) and Zakaria Sawo (Aris).

Djurgården has already had a busy preseason, competing in the Svenska Cupen and UEFA Conference League. In March, they advanced to the Conference League quarterfinals after overcoming a first-leg defeat to Pafos, winning 3-1 on aggregate. In Svenska Cupen, they progressed despite losing to IFK Göteborg (3-4), thanks to a 2-0 win over Sandviken and a 2-2 draw with Oddevold.

Key players in these matches included Keita Kosugi, who scored three goals, as well as Oskar Fallenius and Nguen, who both found the net twice. Other goal scorers included Finndell, August Priske, Siltanen, Daniel Stensson, Zugelj, and Patric Åsund.

Peruvian midfielder Sergio Peña transferred to PAOK for €350,000, while Cameroonian defender Samuel Kotto joined Gent for €800,000 after spending last season on loan at Värnamo.

New signings include 22-year-old Swedish defender Johan Karlsson from Kalmar (€800,000) and 22-year-old forward Emmanuel Ekong from Empoli (€1 million). Icelandic midfielder Arnór Sigurðsson also joined from Blackburn on a free transfer in February.

Isaac Kiese Thelin was Malmö’s top scorer for the second consecutive season, netting 15 goals in 26 matches, just two behind Allsvenskan’s Golden Boot winner, Nikola Vasic of Brommapojkarna.

In preseason, Malmö has focused on Svenska Cupen matches, following their exit from the Europa League group stage in January. They dominated their group, defeating Utsiktens BK (5-0), Skövde (2-1), and Västerås (3-0). In the knockout rounds, they edged out Elfsborg (1-0 AET) and IFK Göteborg (3-2 AET).

Malmö’s top scorers in these matches included Thelin (4 goals), Erik Botheim (3 goals), and several others, including Taha Ali, Oliver Berg, Busanello, Anders Christiansen, Pontus Jansson, Lasse Berg Johnsen, and Otto Rosengren, who each scored once.
