Romania head to Serravalle knowing that nothing less than a dominant win will suffice if they want to keep their World Cup dreams alive. After the shock defeat at home to Bosnia, Mircea Lucescu’s side need not just a response, but a convincing one, and there are few better opportunities in world football than a trip to face San Marino.

Statistically, this is a mismatch of historic proportions. San Marino sit rock bottom in the FIFA rankings, having never won a competitive international in 163 attempts (excluding the UEFA Nations League). They come into this game after a routine 2-0 loss away to Cyprus, a match in which they managed only two shots on target and were outplayed in every department. Even though they’ve shown signs of being slightly more compact recently, they remain one of the weakest sides in Europe, often relying on damage limitation rather than any genuine attacking intent.

Romania, on the other hand, are desperate to reassert their credentials after a frustrating start. The loss to Bosnia was particularly painful – a game where they dominated possession, created 15 chances, but failed to find the net and conceded with the only shot on target from the visitors. It was a bitter blow considering the optimism surrounding this new generation, especially after their excellent Nations League campaign and unbeaten Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Lucescu will be forced to make some changes due to a spate of injuries. Key names like Radu Dragusin, Valentin Mihaila, Darius Olaru and Florinel Coman are all out, but this Romania squad still boasts plenty of quality. Nicolae Stanciu remains a vital cog in midfield, and Ianis Hagi is expected to feature more prominently after starting on the bench against Bosnia. There’s also a strong expectation for Denis Dragus and Dennis Man to start in attack, as Romania look for a more clinical edge.

Tactically, we can expect a Romanian side pushing high up the pitch, controlling possession and aiming to break down what will almost certainly be a deep San Marino block. The hosts are likely to deploy a five-man defence or a very flat 4-5-1, with Nicola Nanni their only outlet up front. But even their improved defensive shape won’t be enough to handle the movement and technical level of Romania’s forwards and midfielders.

San Marino’s squad includes a handful of young players from Italian academies, such as the Benvenuti twins, but they’re still far from the level needed at this stage. Most of their players compete in the local league or Italy’s lower divisions, and the gulf in quality is massive. Even Virtus, the Sanmarinese champions, were outclassed by Steaua Bucharest 1-7 and 0-4 in last summer’s Champions League qualifiers – a telling example, considering only one Virtus player is even in this San Marino squad, and several Romanian internationals come from stronger sides than Steaua.

Romania’s recent away record in qualifiers hasn’t been great, but that speaks more to their inconsistency against mid-level teams than to any vulnerability in fixtures like this. Against the likes of San Marino, they’ve historically cruised – and now, with goal difference being a crucial tie-breaker in the group, the motivation to score multiple goals is high.

Weather conditions in Serravalle are expected to be mild and dry, which should favour Romania’s passing game. The pitch, albeit not top-tier, won’t be a major hindrance, and the visitors should find plenty of joy down the flanks, particularly through Man and Bancu.

In the end, the question isn’t whether Romania win, but by how much. If they show even 70% of the intensity and structure they displayed against Bosnia – minus the finishing problems – this could easily be a three or four-goal margin. Romania know they have to get back on track, and against an opponent as limited as San Marino, they have the perfect chance to do just that.
