Argentina vs Uruguay

Argentina host Uruguay for this FIFA World Cup Qualification match in Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti In Buenos Aires. Whilst Uruguay have had some some success in the past in World Cup and Copa America I see the hosts as very clear favorites.. Let's take a closer look.

Argentin have been playing stunningly well for a long time already and are enjoying an unbeaten run of 23 matches across all competitions! They are a top-5 country in the World. On the 11th of July they defeated Brazil to become Copa America champions. It was very impressive indeed as the match was played at the legendary Maracana in Rio de Janeiro in front of 7800 loud Brazilian fans. Angel Di Maria scored the winning 1-0 goal in the first half. Let's remember Brazil are top-3 country in the World! Brazil were slightly the better team in the match though creating more expected goals and having more ball possession but Argentina defended in a very organized way indeed. A similarly great performance would mean they will probably win today.

In their most recent match a few days ago Argentina played a slightly disappointing goalless draw in Paraguay but dominated the match with a 70% ball possession and creating a lot more in goal expectancy. Paraguay were surely lucky to avoid defeat but did also defend well. However, Paraguay have in fact played pretty well recently and are in the 6th place in the group and have a chance to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 so a draw was nothing we should be worried about. I do feel the Argentina not winning might affect the odds too much here.. Before the Paraguay match Argentina totally crushed Bolivia 3-0 at home and Venezuela 3-1 away from home and had huge ball possession and dominated all the relevant statistics completely. Their opponents had no real chance to take even a point! Today I expect Messi and Di Maria to be too much for Uruguay's defense to shut down. Messi has not had the best season so far in PSG but has been super good in the national team for years already and did play very well versus Manchester City in the Champions League scoring a stunning goal!

Uruguay, on the other hand, have over-performed lately and have more points than they should have. They were quite disappointing in their most recent match at home versus Colombia as clear favorites. It was a 0-0 draw and a pretty balanced match. Uruguay's offense lacked creativity.. Suarez and Cavani are still good strikers but past their prime for sure. Argentine have a great chance to win once again and my pick is the hosts -0.5 goals handicap.
