North Macedonia vs Romania

North Macedonia host Romania at National Arena Toshe Proeski in Skopje early Thursday morning Beijing time. The battle is - and will be fierce behind the very likely group winners Germany here. At the moment Armenia are quite surprisingly in second place with ten points, Romania have nine points and North Macedonia have scored eight points so far. I see both Romania and North Macedonia as better teams by raw class than Armenia and believe one of these two teams will claim the second place in the end.

I disagree with the betting market here and see the two teams pretty equal by raw class, perhaps Romania with their best squad would be slightly stronger. Ahead of this match I strongly believe North Macedonia are under-rated and Romania slightly over-rated. North Macedonia did qualify for the EURO 2020 so I was expecting the betting market to respect them a bit more.. Romania did not qualify for this tournament last summer. In my opinion my native country Finland (despite the lucky 1-0 win over the shocked by Eriksen's heart attack Danes) and North Macedonia were the worst teams in the tournament today's hosts were not bad. It was simply a very competitive tournament! North Macedonia did not grab any points in EURO 2020 but had their chances especially versus Ukraine who did qualify from the group stage and then went on to beat Sweden before getting crushed by England 0-4. North Macedonian football as a whole is definitely on the rise - in Romania the situation is the opposite. There are some changes after the EURO 2020 for the hosts - for example a new manager. Veterans Pandev and Trickovski have retired, so there are new attacking players in the squad. Overall the team has become more aggressive and better in offense which is the right way to go in my opinion for this team. In their most recent match in Iceland they played well but in the end lost the 2-0 lead due to some mistakes. They were, however, the better team and had some twenty scoring chances and 55% ball possession. Iceland recorded nine scoring attempts. Iceland are of course not as good as they were for example in EURO 2016 when they beat England 2-1 but still a decent football country, so the performance was a good one.

Romania beat Liechtenstein in their most recent 2-0 but the opposition was a very small football country and Romania were not particularly good. Before this they beat Iceland 2-0 but the match was pretty balanced. Going into this match Romania don't have the best situation with their squad which is one of the key reasons for this pick. Florinel Coman, Florin Tanase, Florin Andone, Valentin Mihaila, Denis Alibec, Andrei Burca and Nicusor Bancu are the missing regular players. Galatasaray's Olimpiu Morutan was rather strangely not selected at all..

To sum up, with the substantial home advantage the hosts are some 46-47% favorites here and my pick for my growing fan base is North Macedonia -0.5 goals handicap!
