Class and xG

Elche were the worst team in La Liga in my and most analysts books last season, but as even the undeserved wins do count they finally survived. The same is expected this season.

Bilbao started last season poorly, but since Marcelino came in as a coach in January they were for a few months one of the most interesting teams, only to lose two cup finals in the same season and then vanish towards the end of season by lack of motivation. Yet, they are about 10th best team in the league and likely to start strongly as it is Marcelinos style. Hard work has been done. In the end it was the win over Bilbao in the last round last season that saved Elche!

Form

Only friendlies naturally. Elche have met significantly weaker opponents and have won two of their matches, but also drawn twice with Segunda clubs. Perhaps that is their actual class level? Bilbao decided to play English and German top teams mostly, and those matches are better preparation for the league challenges.

Coaching and tactical approach

Both changed managers last season and those continue. As will have 4-4-2 there should be no overpowering at any department, but the individual class will decide. No doubt Bilbao have the better players here, the player ™-value is 7 times that of Elche!

Is this the season when Bilbao have two Williams brothers starting as strikers? Inaki is a reliable and very fast striker who has problems with finishing, and the talk on the street is that younger brother Nico would be an improved edition of him! Anyhow, the best player on the pitch is undoubtedly still winger Iker Muniain. There is also a new keeper at Bilbao for this, Agirrezabala, who has impressed at preseason games. There is a long tradition of good keepers coming from Bilbao youth, and I have full confidence in him succeeding.
