VALLADOLID - VILLARREAL
There’s a huge quality gap in this matchup.
Valladolid is clearly the weakest team in the league, not only in terms of squad quality but also in tactics. Their performances have been poor, their defense is unreliable, and they struggle to keep a clean sheet. They concede many chances, making them an easy target, and they lack attacking quality, with only Raúl Moro posing a real threat. However, Moro struggles physically to last the full 90 minutes—he’s only completed three full games so far.
They’re coming off a fortunate victory against Alaves, which stemmed more from Alaves’s poor performance than Valladolid’s own quality. A lucky penalty in the 15th minute, after they were already down 1-0, gave them a confidence boost, but prior to that, they were completely outplayed and looked lost without a game plan.
It’s hard to identify Valladolid’s strategy this season. They seem to aim for a defensive style, yet they concede numerous chances and goals. They can’t control games in midfield and lack strength in counterattacks, making them tactically one of the weakest teams in the league.
Villarreal, on the other hand, is one of the league’s top teams, particularly in attack, with a squad capable of competing at a Champions League level. Their defense has been a concern, though, with frequent individual and tactical errors. But they compensate by scoring 2-3 goals per game, thanks to their offensive depth.
Villarreal’s only dropped points this season have been against strong attacking teams like Barcelona, Madrid, and Atletico, or in games where they were a bit unlucky, missing key chances, such as against Getafe and Valencia.
Key striker Ayoze, Villarreal’s top offensive player, is back from injury and will be available, either as a starter or off the bench. After going winless in their last two games, Villarreal should be highly motivated here.
Tactically, Villarreal is versatile with multiple options to break down defenses. Valladolid lacks the tools to avoid defeat here; their defense isn’t solid enough, so I expect them to concede at least a couple of goals. Upfront, they’re low on quality, so I don’t see them scoring more than one goal in this matchup.
LAS PALMAS - GIRONA
Las Palmas cleared their minds and gained a significant boost in confidence after their recent 3-2 victory over Valencia. This win ended an eight-month winless streak and marked the debut of their new coach, Diego Martinez, providing the perfect start to this new era with renewed energy and motivation.
In reality, Las Palmas doesn’t have a weak squad, especially in attack. However, the players were mentally blocked, struggling to respond under pressure. This victory should help them regain focus and start accumulating more points. While the win against Valencia was somewhat fortunate, they had previously endured unlucky defeats or draws, as their performances weren’t as poor as the results might suggest. Diego Martinez is a strong coach, and I’m confident he will bring positive changes to this team.
Meanwhile, Girona faces the same issues as last weekend, with a total of 11 players confirmed as unavailable for this match. Key starters like Oriol Romeu, Tsygankov, Abel Ruiz, Bryan Gil, and Ivan Martin are out, along with important rotation players like Portu and Asprilla.
This extensive list of absences limits Girona's ability to rotate players and find viable options in attack. They secured an important midweek victory in Europe against Slovan Bratislava but had to use nearly the same squad as in their league matches, which means they’ll be grappling with fatigue. For this game, they have only four senior players available on the bench, with the remaining spots filled by youngsters from the B team.
As coach Michel said, “we need to survive until November, when the international break will allow us to recover some players.”
Given their current situation, it’s difficult for Girona to remain competitive with so many key absences, fatigue, and a lack of rotation options. Their frontline is missing all regular starters and, in some cases, even their backups, so coach Michel will have to improvise and field players out of position.
This is a great opportunity for Las Palmas to build on their recent success and secure more points or, at the very least, avoid defeat.
