Georgia’s debut in the continental tournament was remarkable—despite low expectations, they secured a historic win against Portugal and immediately advanced to the playoffs. Though their dream ended in the round of 16, they were eliminated by one of the eventual champions, despite the lopsided scoreline.

Upon their return from Germany, the team was welcomed by thousands of fans in their homeland. Now, those same supporters will fill the stands in Tbilisi, providing a crucial advantage.

Georgia struggled defensively during the EURO, but Giorgi Mamardashvili often compensated for these shortcomings with stellar goalkeeping. He was quick and reliable in goal, but the same defensive issues remain.

Still, the team looks very strong. Georges Mikautadze, who netted three goals and shared the EURO Golden Boot with six others, is set to feature in the upcoming Nations League matches. Another star, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, has also been called up. The Napoli winger has already recorded a goal and an assist in just three Serie A matches this season.

It’s important to highlight how much the home crowd boosts Georgia’s performance—since November 2021, they’ve lost just one game, against Spain. Out of the remaining 12 matches, they won eight, including a penalty shootout victory over Greece.

A reminder: Georgia and the Czech Republic met in the group stage at Euro 2024 in Germany, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. It could have gone differently, as Mamardashvili made 11 saves that day. However, Georgia had their own chances and could deliver a similar performance in Tbilisi, particularly in attack.

I find it hard to imagine the Czech Republic winning this match. Their EURO campaign was unimpressive—lacking creativity, cohesion, and even basic passing accuracy. Yes, they have talented players like Hložek, Schick, and Souček, but they aren’t in great form.

Since reaching the quarterfinals in 2021, the Czech Republic has been underwhelming. Finishing fourth in their group, far from contention, was a failure. Their only point came from the draw with Georgia. While they weren’t terrible, they missed opportunities against both Turkey and Portugal. In the decisive match against Turkey, an early red card crippled them, and against Portugal, they were simply worn down, losing their 1-0 lead in the second half.

To make matters worse, the Czech Republic will be without their main defender and goalkeeper. Jindřich Staněk is still recovering from the injury he picked up at the EURO. In his absence, Matej Kovář from Bayer Leverkusen is expected to start in goal. Right before the national team games, Tomáš Holeš picked up an injury after playing the full 90 minutes in Germany. Another Slavia Prague player, Tomáš Vlček, has been sidelined since July.

Under the current coaching staff, their only notable away win came in March, when they beat Norway in a friendly. Their performances in competitive away games have been poor. In Euro 2024 qualifying, the only team they managed to beat on the road was the Faroe Islands, 3-0. Aside from Poland, Albania and Moldova were also in that group.

Georgia has proven to be a tough opponent, especially at home. In their last 13 matches, they’ve only lost to Spain. Euro 2024 was a disappointment for the Czech Republic, and with the same coaching staff in place, it’s not just the players who need to improve. The challenges ahead will be significant. The Czechs have struggled away from home, as evidenced by their limited number of victories.

It will be tough to break down a confident Georgia side. For me, the hosts are the clear choice here, with a strong attack and the backing of their passionate home crowd.
