Iceland VS Montenegro

Iceland welcome Montenegro for this UEFA Nations League League B round 1 battle at Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, early Saturday morning Beijing time. A clash of quite mediocre quality by this competition's standards is on the cards here. Iceland are in 71st place in the FIFA Ranking. This is slightly too low. Around 65-66th would be a more accurate place for them in this ranking. Montenegro currently occupy the 73rd place in the FIFA Ranking but should, in my expert opinion, be ranked 76th or 77th-best nationally in the world – with the best possible lineup, including the substitute players. Both countries are small in terms of population but are still decent football nations. Iceland have had more success in the past, for example beating England in the EURO 2016. Furthermore, they even qualified for the World Cup in 2018. Yes, they have undoubtedly declined from that level – and were quite lame some 3-4 years ago but have improved recently. They finished in 4th place in EURO 2024 Qualification Group J, taking a total of 10 points, one more than Bosnia & Herzegovina. Portugal topped the group and Slovakia finished 2nd – it was indeed a tough group.. In the EURO 2024 Qualification Promotion Semifinal in March Iceland were strong and deservedly beat Israel, a dangerous opponent, 4-1 at a neutral location. Iceland recorded many more goal attempts and shots on goal but were pretty clear underdogs on the betting market.. The bookies should respect them more. Before crushing Israel, Iceland beat Honduras 1-0 in a friendly game in Florida, USA. In the EURO 2024 Qualification Promotion Final They pushed a strong team, Ukraine, well – as big underdogs – even taking an early lead. However, Ukraine – with many players in the top-5 leagues, scored two unanswered goals in the 2nd half. They deserved the narrow win but Iceland still performed well! In their last game Iceland traveled to the Netherlands. The Dutch, a top-10 team in the world, swept past Iceland at De Kuip in Rotterdam, winning 4-0 as very big favourites. However, before this Iceland defeated the EURO 2024 finalists, England, at Wembley Stadium in London 1-0 after a terrific defensive performance. They even recorded many more shots on goal than England! Both of these games were friendlies.

In front of their fans I see Iceland having a 52% chance of taking all three points. We must remember that the home advantage is almost always substantial! Montenegro finished in 3rd place in EURO 2024 Qualification G where a total of five countries played. They took 11 points and had a score difference of 9:11. However, I want to emphasize that the group was much easier than the group where Iceland played! Hungary won the group, followed by Serbia. Lithuania finished in 4th place and Bulgaria took 5th place. Both are very lame teams. Montenegro have lost two of their last matches. In their most recent match they suffered a defeat (1-3) to Georgia. Yes, Georgia, with some luck, qualified for the EURO 2024 Playoffs but at home Montenegro should have played better. The Georgians recorded 10 shots on goal – the hosts managed only three. Moreover, it was a friendly game and all of the Georgia players were not firing on all cylinders – avoiding injuries and fatigue ahead of the EURO 2024.. Before this Montenegro had very little chance in Belgium – losing 0-2. The hosts generated 2.89 in expected goals (xG), Montenegro managed 0.54. The Belgians were not "all in" in this friendly game, mainly for the same reasons as the Georgians. In March Montenegro managed to beat North Macedonia 1-0 at a neutral location, the opponent having 56% ball possession, many more goal attempts and one more shots on and off target. Montenegro did not impress me as a whole. Iceland's head coach Hareide did not spring any real surprises when it came to his squad for the team's next two games. It is expected to be a recognisable starting eleven for Friday's (local time) contest. A player to watch very closely here is  Orri Oskarsson, who plays his club football for a big Spanish team, Real Sociedad! The youngster has scored two goals in eight caps for the national side and is improving all the time.. Furthermore, Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson hit the winner against England In June and is an often underrated player.
