SERBIA - SPAIN

Serbia had a terrible EURO, going winless in all three games. Even against a weak team like Slovenia, they weren’t able to secure a victory. For this fixture, they’ll have to cope with the absence of key players: their top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic (injury), important striker Vlahovic (familiar reasons), and midfielder Milinkovic-Savic (injury). Upfront, they will be replaced by Luka Jovic, who has only played 65 minutes this season due to injuries and remains doubtful for this match.

Without those players, Serbia appears significantly weakened, lacking quality, and with key players either underperforming or playing for average teams. Only defender Pavlovic and midfielder Ilic are in good form at the moment. I expect Serbia to adopt a defensive approach, similar to what they did in the EUROs, where they scored just 1 goal in three games. While they were tough to beat, they also created very few chances.

In recent years, Serbia has been a competitive team and difficult to break down, but they have struggled in big games or against top-tier teams. Their recent performances in international tournaments (World Cup, EURO) were disappointing. Also suffered defeats against all the strong teams they faced recently: Austria (2-1), England (1-0), Belgium (1-0), Hungary (2-1), Switzerland (3-2), and Brazil (2-0).

On the other hand, Spain enters this tournament as one of the main title contenders, being the current EURO winners and arguably the strongest team in Europe at the moment. They will also have a few absences for this fixture, including striker Morata, midfielders Mikel Merino and Rodri, and goalkeeper Unai Simon.

However, Spain has plenty of strong alternatives to replace those players. To cover for Morata, they can use a false nine or put Oyarzabal upfront. In midfield, Spain boasts a lot of quality, with in-form players like Pedri, Dani Olmo, and Lamine Yamal. Several other players have been called up due to their recent performances, such as Mingueza and Pepelu.

Overall, Spain is a team that thrives on collective strength rather than individual brilliance. Their current squad is almost identical to the one that triumphed at the EUROs, so I expect a similar level of performance. In the last three years, Spain has only lost 5 games (against Colombia, Scotland, Japan in the World Cup, and Switzerland).

As a team, Spain is far superior to Serbia. They will likely dominate and control possession, while Serbia will try to keep the game low-scoring. It will be a tough match in Belgrade, with strong home support, but Spain has shown resilience even when playing away against strong teams, as they did against Germany in the EURO and Portugal (0-1) in 2022.

It's also worth noting that Spain is the current tournament winner and was the runner-up in 2020/21. This time, they are once again the favorites, and the first step toward success is finishing at the top of their tough group, which includes strong teams like Denmark and Switzerland.

DENMARK - SWITZERLAND

This pick is based on what I observed during the EURO, where Denmark was a huge disappointment and Switzerland was a big surprise, performing exceptionally well. Switzerland’s main weak point was in attack, where they struggled to create many chances and managed to score only 2 goals in 4 games.

This was a continuation of their performance in the EURO qualifiers, where they scored only 19 goals in 10 games against weak sides like Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland, San Marino, Finland, and Slovenia. A strong Denmark team could have easily scored those 19 goals just in the two games against San Marino.

After the EURO, coach Kasper Hjulmand decided to resign, and his intended replacement, Morten Wieghorst, declined the position due to stress. The new head coach is now Lars Knudsen, who was part of Jess Thorup’s staff at Augsburg (Bundesliga).

Knudsen has brought 5 debutants into the squad: midfielders Morten Frendrup (Genoa) and Albert Grönbaek (Rennes), defender Patrick Dorgu (Lecce), and two goalkeepers, Mads Hermansen (Leicester) and Peter Vindahl Jensen. There are also some familiar faces like Kasper Schmeichel, Jannik Vestergaard, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Yussuf Poulsen, and Christian Eriksen, who has earned 134 international caps in his career.

There are notable absences, with Matt O'Riley, Maurits Kjaergaard, Frederik Rønnow, Andreas Christensen, Joakim Maehle, and Rasmus Højlund all out due to injury. Additionally, Simon Kjær and Thomas Delaney have retired from the national team.

On the other hand, Switzerland looks stronger than Denmark at the moment. They had a much better EURO, qualifying from a group that included Germany, beating Italy in the round of 16, and narrowly losing on penalties to England in the quarter-finals. They finished the EURO unbeaten in regular time.

Since the 2022 World Cup, Switzerland has lost only 1 of their 19 matches—against Romania in the EURO qualifiers (1-0). Goalkeeper Yann Sommer has retired from international duty, as have Fabian Schär and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Despite these retirements, almost all the key players remain in the squad, in contrast to Denmark, which is dealing with several injuries and absences. Talented players from Young Boys, Filip Ugrinic and Joël Monteiro, are also included in the squad.

The two teams played a friendly in March, which ended 0-0 and was very balanced, with only two shots on target for each side. Denmark is usually strong at home in Copenhagen, but they will be without Højlund, and Eriksen has played only 5 minutes across 4 games this season.
