Newcastle definitely have a chance to take a top-6 place this season - even a place in the top-4 would not be a massive surprise! Newcastle's number of expected points (xPTS) last season was 66.76 but actually took "only" 60 points.. Tottenham grabbed 66 points and their xPTS was only 56.77! Rather interestingly, Newcastle's score difference was +23, Tottenham's goal difference was much worse - +13.. The hosts will unfortunately be without Botman, Dubravka, Lascelles, Miley, Schar and Wilson. Willock is questionable. As for Tottenham, Richarlison and Solanke are out. With the expected lineups, Tottenham are marginally the stronger team but with the huge home advantage Newcastle deserve to be the favourites. The bookmakers have made yet another mistake with their odds here - most of the biggest bookies see Tottenham as slim favourites, so we will take the Newcastle +0.5 goals handicap option! However, I expect smart money to pile up on the hosts, resulting in odds dropping before the kickoff.

I want to emphasize that Newcastle have not lost any of their last 11 games at St. James' Park, winning the majority of the 11 matches. They have now won four times - and taken one draw - in their last five matches. In their most recent game, they beat Nottingham 2-1 on the road after penalties on the road in an EFL Cup clash. Newcastle recorded many more goal attempts, shots on goal, corner kicks, attacks and dangerous attacks. Before this it was a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth away from home. Newcastle were slightly the better team on the pitch as a whole. Bournemouth played clearly above their normal level in this match. In round 1 Newcastle defeated Southampton 1-0 at St. James' Park despite Schar being sent off in the 28th minute when the score was still 0-0. Tottenham have won one of their last four games. In their last game they beat Everton 4-0 at home. I need to highlight that Everton were very poor in this game! Today this out-of-form team lost 2-3 at home to Bournemouth despite leading 2-0 in the 86th minute. I will not give Tottenham beating Everton that much emphasis. Tottenham, of course, deserved to win but the final score flatters them. The hosts had 13 goal attempts, Everton managed 10. The expected goals (xG) number were 2.45-0.76. In round 1 Tottenham played a 1-1 draw with Leicester away from home. Tottenham were priced around 1.70 to win by the bookies. They were very strong and active in the 1st half, taking 1-0 lead. However, they seriously declined in the 2nd half and veteran striker J. Vardy levelled the score. Indeed, Tottenham area rather erratic team.. On a good day they can defeat any opponent but also quite often perform incredibly poorly - at least for 30-45 minutes per game against lowly opponents.. Tottenham generated 1.21 in xG – Leicester - a newly-promoted team with a limited squad for this level - managed 1.16.
