HJK improved throughout the season



HJK's season has been anything but easy. In the Veikkausliiga, the going has been good and, mostly bad compared to their expectations of being the only big club in the country.

Now HJK are four points behind league leader KuPS. The coaching changes made at the beginning of the season did mess things up, and Toni Korkeakunnas, who coached HJK at the end of last season, has already been in charge for most of this season as well. HJK's material should be able to fight both at the top of the Veikkausliiga and in the European games, but this season there has been too much ups and downs, not much reliability or consistency. The signing of Lee Erwin has boosted the team's performance on the offensive end, and he has saved HJK on his own several times, just like in the first leg. (2-2)

HJK have cleared their way to the last qualifying round of the Conference League by knocking out FK Decic Tuzi after a place in the Champions League did not open up. They lost to a Lithuanian rather weak side in the CL-round.

HJK have already played European games in the group stage for several years, and even now they have a reasonable result from the Faroe Islands as a guest of KI Klaksvik. At home, HJK have been traditionally very strong, and even now they have nine consecutive unbeaten home matches behind them. The injury situation is also good, but selling their top winger Topi Keskinen to Aberdeen does weaken the team a bit.

KI Klaksvik are third in the current season, and even though there is already a 9 points gap behind the league leader Vikingur, the season will end in the top three. Klaksvik finishing in the playoff round of the Conference League can already be considered a good achievement, progressing to the group stage would already be a big surprise. The form is good 4-1-1, they are healthy and ready to attack HJK on the away field. Klaksvik has been dangerous offensively throughout the season, and this is where the team's biggest weapon against HJK lies. They also looked like the better-coached team in the first leg, HJK have so many new players that their performances are not very balanced.
