SEVILLA - VILLARREAL

Sevilla is a team that I believe will take considerable time to find their best form. With a new coach, many changes in the squad, and a new playing style focused on possession and high pressing, adaptation will be challenging. This style of play is particularly difficult for Sevilla’s current defenders, as Nianzou and Badé struggle when defending large spaces, while Gudelj is a midfielder and Kike Salas lacks the necessary strength.

They have made some promising signings in the transfer market, but these players are unpredictable—capable of delivering outstanding performances or being completely ineffective. Additionally, they’ve lost key players, such as En-Nesyri, which weakens the squad.

In their first match, Sevilla drew 2:2 with Las Palmas, although they deserved to win. Several key defenders (Acuña, Navas, Kike Salas, Badé) were absent due to injuries or transfer-related issues. Acuña has since left the club. The team’s defensive performance was poor, and it remains unclear who will play in defense, especially in the center-back positions, for this fixture.

The coach made very defensive substitutions in the 70th minute when the score was 2:2, which signals a lack of ambition within the team (and was also a risky decision as Las Palmas was pressing hard).

On the other hand, Villarreal is a team I have high expectations for this season. They have a solid project, a strong squad, a good coach, and made some interesting transfers. This is a team that should finish in the top 6 at least. They secured a respectable 2:2 draw against Atlético Madrid in the previous round.

However, Villarreal faces a serious challenge for this fixture: they are the only team in La Liga playing three games in seven days, so coach Marcelino will need to rotate his players effectively. For me, this is a 50-50 game. While Sevilla is strong at home, Villarreal arguably has more quality and better players, especially in the attack.

CELTA - VALENCIA

Celta is a mid-table team that had some luck in their previous game against Alavés, scoring the winning goal (2:1) in the 84th minute. A draw would have been a fairer result. They are an inconsistent team with a weak defense, often struggling to keep a clean sheet.

For this game, coach Giraldez could make further changes to the lineup, possibly benching players who were substituted at halftime in the previous match due to poor performances, such as Manquillo, Starfelt, and Bamba.
