FC Twente Enschede VS Red Bull Salzburg

Twente welcome Salzburg for in for this UEFA Champions League Qualification round 3 second leg clash at De Grolsch Veste in Enschede early Wednesday morning Beijing time. Football enthusiasts and us serious, profit-hungry bettors can expect a match of very high level by this competition's 3rd round standards here! Firstly I want to emphasize that as a whole the Dutch Eredivisie is much better than the Austrian Bundesliga. However, Salzburg have been very strong in this league and have achieved some success in the Champions League in recent years.. Sturm Graz are also a pretty good team.. The difference between the best teams and lowly teams, however, is massive in the Austrian Bundesliga. As a result, Salzburg do not get to play that many touch matches with a high tempo against dangerous opponents in their domestic league.. This has a negative effect on their chances in international games.. Sturm Graz won the Bundesliga last season by a margin of two points before Salzburg.. I want to highlight that Salzburg are not as strong as they were approximately five years ago.. They are an extremely young team with an average age less than 22 years! The Twente squad has an average age of 25 years. Yes, the Salzburg squad is full of very talented, but mostly inexperienced players.. For example, the Danish midfielder Maurits Kjaergaard was excellent in the 1st leg. Argentinian attacking Midfielder Oscar Gloukh, 20, is the most valuable Salzburg player according to a well-known source, Transfermarkt.com. For Salzburg this is a very high-pressure match as failing to qualify for the group stage would surely be a huge disappointment to Salzburg as a club as well as the players - wanting to play for much bigger clubs in the future. They would also miss a lot of UEFA prize money..

Salzburg deservedly won the first leg 2-1 at home. They recorded seven shots on goal, Twente managed three. The 2-1 result means that both teams have a genuine chance to qualify, of course. A draw would of course be enough for the Austrians. There will surely not want to just "enter the pitch and try to play cautious football – ie. defend a draw" but there is long-term data suggesting that in reality this very often impossible to avoid.. In most football games the team trailing has a higher goal expectancy than they would have if the score were level.. Moreover, Salzburg are not at their best when defending.. We have often witnessed this in the Champions League group stage games  in the past.. The Salzburg defence is not very solid even against much weaker opponents than Twente. They have, in fact, kept a clean sheet in only one of their last six competitive games.. This happened on the 26th of July when they beat a very small team, Dornbirn, 6-0 on away from home – priced around 1.02-1.04 to win by the bookies in the 90 minutes of play.. It was an OFB Cup game. I will give this game only very marginal emphasis ahead of this massive challenge against Twente..

As most of my fans probably are aware of by now – the home advantage in UEFA's international club games is almost always substantial - often even bigger than the bookies and recreational bettors seem to realize.. Salzburg very rarely face opponents of Twente's level in the Bundesliga and do not have a lot of experience of defending. Indeed, in the Bundesliga they have a high ball possession % in most games. I expect them to struggle under the big pressure Twente will probably put on their defence.. Twente are a very strong home team – they have won six of the competitive games at home - four of these seven matches by a margin of more than one goal! Moreover, they have lost just one of the last 10 competitive games at De Grolsch Veste. Salzburg have lost three – and won three of the last six competitive away games. All the wins were achieved over significantly smaller teams than Twente.. The biggest bookies with the largest stake limits see Twente as slim favourites here at the time of posting this analysis. I disagree – with expected lineups - the massive home advantage and the 1-2 on aggregate into account – I see them as bigger favourites than the bookies. The Twente win, - at the odds of around 2.50 - is my favourite option here but we will take the hosts +0.5 goals handicap option with a big chance of winning for the 8th time in a row!

Twente performed very well last season, grabbing more points than for example AZ Alkmaar and Ajax. PSV and Feyenoord were much better though.. Indeed, Twente took 69 points - and third place. Their score difference was excellent – 69:36. Salzburg have faced very lowly opponents.. These kinds of matches are not the perfect preparation for a match against a team of Twente's caliber. After beating Twente at home, Salzburg defeated BW Linz at home 5-1. They were priced around 1.35 to win on the betting market. Yes, they deserved the three points against a pretty lowly opponent but the final score is still very misleading! Salzburg recorded five shots on goal – Linz managed three. In round 1 of the Bundesliga Salzburg beat Grazer AK 3-2 on the road. They were priced around 1.25-1.30 to win by the bookmakers. They had 71.30% ball possession but recorded only one more shot on target than the hosts.. Salzburg did not fully impress me and would  have to improve to eliminate Twente at De Grolsch Veste..  

Let's not forget that Twente have lost only one of their last nine games. They finished the Eredivisie season with two wins. In round 34 they beat Zwolle only 2-1 but generated 2.78 in xG – the hosts managed only 0.55. Twente also recorded a whopping 26 goal attempts! In round 33 they crushed FC Volendam 7-2 at De Grolsch Veste. Twente played five friendly matches in the preseason. Four of their last opponents were formidable: German teams Schalke and Hannover, Danish Nordsjaelland and Belgian St. Truiden. Twente defeated the Danes 2-1 at a neutral location – all the other four friendly matches were draws. Twente making it to the group stage would mean a lot for the club and the players and I expect them to be fired up in front of their loud and loyal fans here! However, on the betting market they were the underdogs before the 1st leg – and still are, of course - to qualify. I expected them to be somewhat relaxed  - enjoying the challenge. Michel Vlap's very late 2-1 goal was surely a big boost to the Dutch!
