The most interesting game of the day

On Monday, the eyes will turn again to France, where Olympic football has advanced to the semi-final stage. The focal point this time is the match between Morocco and Spain.

Morocco advanced to the semi-finals after knocking out the USA in style and deservedly so with a score of 4–0. There wasn't much air left in XG either, as the USA scored half a goal and Morocco scored almost three goals, as expected by xG-metrics. Which, of course, are not always fully correct.

During the Games, Morocco has already managed to knock down Argentina with a good performance after the dramatic final stages, as well as Iraq, deservedly so. The tight Alakerta against Ukraine was a difficult game by far, but instead of a loss, the distribution of points would have described the events better.

Morocco has been fresh, active, and finished with good performances. The team turns the game around quickly and efficiently. When the game surges, the lions of Atlas are in their comfort zone. The seniors in the team bring quality to the floor as well as to the attack. Goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi, captain and top scorer Achraf Hakimi and five-hit striker Soufiane Rahimi have been clear reinforcements. The attacking trio of Abde Ezzalzouli, Soufiane Rahimi and Ilyas Akhomachi has been simply brilliant!

In the first group matches Spain did not show their best skills and in fact the games were tight and, compared to expectations, sluggish. Uzbekistan got beaten from a losing position 2–1 and they lost to Egypt with 2nd string players in an insignificant match. The semi-final against Japan was clear in terms of results and the threat of Japan scoring goals was quite small, but La Roja… they should be able to do better!

Spain wants to control the ball and control the flow of the game. The team plays variations of the 4-3-3 formation and probably against Morocco with two more defensive midfielders. Against Morocco's midfield of five, the spaces in the center are tight, so Spain will most likely try to advance from the wing lanes. The 1v1 challenges are the focus in terms of breaking through, but in high concentration, Morocco is high quality under Hakim's leadership. La Roja's bottom half has not been convincing in the tournament and now there will be a rush as Morocco attack quickly. Spain can be challenged and hurt if they fail with the midfield balance!

It could be a better and more entertaining encounter than the semifinals usually are and several of my colleagues do see goals in this! If so, it also allows Morocco to score a goal or two, and they might very well win this one!
