Sparta Praha VS Shamrock Rovers

Sparta Prague welcome Shamrock Rovers for this UEFA Champions League Qualification round 2 second leg battle at epet ARENA very early Wednesday morning Beijing time. Football enthusiasts and us serious bettors – with a long-term profit in mind - can expect a match of somewhat average quality by this competition's standards here. The main reason for this is the huge difference in class between the two teams!  Most importantly, we have yet another very promising betting opportunity here.. We have won five picks in a row betting on the UEFA Champions League/ Qualification for the best international club competition on the planet.

The hosts are a Czech club, the visitors come from Ireland. A one-sided clash is expected here..  The home advantage is substantial, as usual in UEFA's international club games. Even the small teams from the UK, Iceland and Ireland sometimes achieve surprisingly strong results at home but a team of Shamrock's caliber rarely avoid a clear defeat on the road - even against less strong teams than Sparta. No, the Sparta Prague fans are not among the loudest in Europe but still want to be entertained here. The hosts' Danish head coach L. Friis could do some squad rotation here but I expect him to include at least most of his best players in the starting eleven. If/when Sparta take a lead by a big margin Friis will surely make some substitutions though.. However, Sparta have a deep squad, full of top-quality players who are eager to show what they are capable of! Sparta won the first leg 2-0 so their chance of qualifying for the 3rd round is extremely high. However, I do not expect Sparta to take any risks here.. An early goal for the visitors – no matter how lucky – a red card or something usual could boost the visitors' confidence and make this an unnecessarily nervy affair from Sparta's point of view.. Indeed, I expect Sparta to push hard right from the kickoff, aiming for a quick goal or two – putting bug pressure on the visitors' shaky defence.. The Shamrock defence has, indeed, been clearly more poorly organized than last season.. Odds of around 1.45 on the Sparta -1.5 goals handicap option are offered by the biggest bookies who accept the largest stakes from customers. However, my favourite option here is the Sparta -2.5 goals handicap option with a 54% chance of winning. Odds of over 2.20 are widely available at the time of posting this preview!

Sparta were the much better team in the first leg last week. They had close to 70% ball possession and recorded many more goal attempts (13-7), shots on goal (9-2), corner kicks (7-1) attacks (201-111) as well as dangerous attacks – 158-66 to be precise. The Czechs also generated much more in expected goals (xG).  Sparta have a massive edge over the visitors in all areas of the game. Their players' individual skill level is from another galaxy compared to that of the Shamrock Rovers players! Moreover, Sparta have a lot of experience of playing in UEFA's club competitions' group stages. Indeed, last season they even qualified for the UEFA Europa League Playoffs but Liverpool, one of the best teams in Europe, easily eliminated them. Sparta Prague are the reigning champions of Czechia, formerly known as the Czech Republic. They won the Fortuna Liga with a great 87 points last season. They scored an impressive 82 goals, clearly the highest number in the Fortuna Liga! Moreover, they conceded only 30 goals. The Fortuna Liga is of mediocre level as a whole by European standards. However, I want to highlight that Sparta Prague, Slavia Prague and Plzen are much better than the rest of the teams by pure class. 

We must give enough emphasis to the fact the Fortuna Liga is massively better than the lowly Irish Premier Division! Most of my fans probably remember me mentioning about the poor level of this league many times in the past.. The Shamrock players very rarely face opponents (even nearly) of Sparta caliber and do, as a result, seriously struggle dealing with the tempo needed to do well at this level.. Most of the best young Irish players leave the country at a young age to build a career abroad. Shamrock topped the Premier Division standings with 72 points last season but their number of expected points (xPTS) was "only" 66.67. However, they have declined significantly this season. They are only in the 5th place at the moment! They have taken only 34 points but their number of xPTS is higher though. Shelbourne, the current leaders, have grabbed 47 points. For reference, Shelbourne were beaten by Zurich, a worse team than Sparta Prague, 3-0 in Switzerland last week.. Before losing to Sparta, Shamrock lost to Bohemians 0-1 away from home as clear favourites - priced around 2.00 to win in the 90 minutes of play by the bookies. It was a somewhat lame performance as a whole in this FAI Cup clash.

In the previous round of qualification Shamrock defeated a team from Iceland, Vikingur Reykjavik, 2-1 on aggregate but did not deserve to qualify! Before taking a look at both legs I want to mention that the Icelandic Besta Deild Karla is of very low level by European standards. The first leg in Iceland was a goalless draw but Vikingur had 72.60% ball possession and recorded many more goal attempts, shots off target, attacks and dangerous attacks – 200-49! They also generated much more in xG. In the 2nd leg, in Ireland, Vikingur had "only" 60% ball possession but recorded many more goal attempts, shots off target, attacks and dangerous attacks. Shamrock took the lead in the first half through J. Kenny's two quick goals despite not being the better team on the pitch early on.. Shamrock's J. Byrne was sent off in the 74th minute which allowed Vikingur to put big pressure on the hosts' defence but failed to net the ball. The score at the time of the red card was 2-1. Vikingur's N. Hansen even missed a penalty in the 90th+8 minute! To sum up, Vikingur can blame themselves for being eliminated..

Sparta have been in fine form, winning three games in a row. In their last game they swept past Teplice, taking an impressive 4-1 on the road. Sparta had 67.80% ball possession and recorded many more goal attempts, shots on goal, shots off goal, attacks and dangerous attacks. The xG numbers were 2.45-0.89 in Sparta's favour. Before this Sparta beat FK Pardubice only 2-1 but were hugely the better team on the pitch! Indeed, they recorded an impressive 20 goal attempts! The xG numbers were 2.56-0.54. Lastly I want to mention that according to a well-known and respected German website, Transfermarkt.com, Sparta Prague are the bigger team here - by a massive margin! Indeed, their players are valued at an estimated approximately 72 million euros !This is more or less correct. The Shamrock squad, on the other hand, is valued at only about 3.90 million euros. This is, in my expert opinion, still slightly too high though.. Three of the visitors' players are overvalued! I want to highlight that 3.90 million is a very low number by the Champions League Qualification 2nd round standards! Having said that, I want to highlight that the total market values very often reflect the teams' level on the pitch well but can, of course, sometimes be misleading as well.. For example, a still extremely good player, Lionel Messi, 37, who plays for Inter Miami in the MLS in the USA, is valued at "only'' 30 million euros.
