I don’t see the USA favorite here.

They are coming from a very solid victory 3:0 over Zambia, but Zambia is one of the worst teams in this tournament. Furthermore, Zambia received a red card at 30’ when they were 3:0 down, so it was a very easy game for the USA.

The team is currently going through a generational rejuvenation and so doesn’t have quite the same level of stability as before.

With veterans like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe having moved on it is time for new players to establish themselves as the team’s stars. Some good examples I expect to be the key are Lindsey Horan, who has shone for Lyon and played very well against Zambia, or Mallory Swanson, who already has 34 goals for her country and already scored two goals against Zambia.

In the previous World Cup 2023 we saw how USA struggled against European teams: didn’t manage to get a single victory against them: drew against Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden, losing in ⅛ finals against the Swedish team in penalties. It’s true that the game against Portugal was very unlucky and deserved to win, but against the Netherlands the draw was fair, as well as Sweden. And Germany is a better team than Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal in my opinion.

Indeed Germany beat Netherlands 0:2 recently in the Nations League.

Germany is a team I expect to reach the latter stages of this tournament. I see them at the same level as the USA.

Their core is built upon Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich players so they have quality and should combine well, while in Alexandra Popp they also have a reliable source of goals. They are coming from a solid victory 3:0 over Australia, with a great performance by Jule Brand and defender Hegering, not only defending well, also scoring one goal. Popp played well but didn’t find the net, and I expect her still to prove why she is one of the best strikers in the world.

I expect Germany to be motivated in this tournament after a terrible World Cup, where they lost in the group stage. However, they made a good Eurocup, losing in the semi-finals against France in a very tight game, and finishing 3rd.

I really believe that both of these teams, but especially Germany, are in the same group of favorites as Spain and France. Germany has a very solid team in defense and really dangerous upfront.

Germany has more experience here, as remember that the USA is in the middle of a regeneration. I also see a bit more quality in the german side, especially with Popp who is one of the best players in the tournament.
