There’s a huge difference here.

Shamrock was very lucky qualifying in the previous round against Vikingur, as they narrowly escaped a remarkable comeback after conceding in the 60th minute to Nikolaj Hansen and Rover’s Jack Byrne being sent off in the 74th. Their dismay was subsided after Vikingur’s Hansen failed to capitalise on a brace opportunity, missing a penalty deep into stoppage time, allowing Bradley’s squad to avoid extra time and advance to the second round.

Shamrock played in both games with a very defensive approach: in the first leg had 27% possession and in the second one (playing at home), less than 40%.

Furthermore, they are not coming with the best preparation: they are coming from a defeat 1:0 against Bohemians in the FAI Cup on the weekend. It's difficult to balance all three competitions this year and the changes Stephen Bradley made did little to ignite a performance.

I believe that this team doesn't have the quality and squad depth needed to play in the Champions League. Last season they also played UCL Qualifiers and lost both home and away games (2:1 and 0:1) against Breidablik.

On the other hand, while Vikingur had international experience, Sparta really does represent a difference in quality.

They have plenty of experience in Europe, and have several top players such as Veljko Birmancevic who is their star player, scoring 16 goals last year, and featured for Serbia this summer. They also have six internationals who featured at Euro 2024 and Copa America, including two for their home nation in Jan Kuchta, Martin Vitik, Angelo Preciado, Qazim Laci…

Furthermore, made good movements in the transfer market. Recent signings Imanol García (Athletic Bilbao) and Peter Vindahl (AZ Alkmaar) show they have ambitions to progress this season, as well as loan Mathias-Ross from Galatasaray.

Furthermore, they are coming with good pace as the Czech league has started already, playing the first round this weekend where Sparta won 2:1 against Pardubice.

Quality difference is huge here. Shamrock isn’t the best Irish team and is not even close to that (they finished 4th in the league), whilst Sparta won the title and have plenty of experience in Europe, with a squad built to be competitive in this competition.
