UEFA Europa League qualifiers. Previous game finished 2:1 for Botev. It was a pretty open game with chances for both teams.

Both teams are still in preseason, and the Slovenian league is going to start this weekend. Maribor finished second last season, and has plenty of experience in Europe. They have some good players such as the veteran Josip Ilicic, who played in the EURO this summer with Slovenia.

Last season, Maribor won in the Conference League qualifiers, beating turking giants Fenerbahce. At home they are a strong team: last season they had a balance of 15/1/2 with 44 goals scored and 12 conceded.

They are one of the best teams in Slovenia and I believe they still have potential to play better as they did in the previous game, especially with their quality upfront.

On the other hand, Botev Plovdiv isn’t among the best teams in Bulgaria. They are playing this qualifiers because they won the Cup against Ludogorets with a lot of luck, but in the league they finished 7th and then in the Conference League group lost 4 games and drew 1.

This is the first time they are playing European competitions since 7 years ago, so they are lacking experience as well.

In the previous game, Joonas Tamm was subbed off at half time due to an injury, and is doubtful for this game. He is one of their most important defenders.

Although I believe that both leagues could be at the same level (Bulgaria and Slovenia), Maribor is one of the best teams in the league whilst Botev isn’t. That’s the main difference between both sides.

I think that will be a difficult game for Botev, as Maribor is a strong home team with more experience. Maribor didn’t play well in the previous game so they have more potential than Plovdiv, who showed their best level in the previous game.

Physically, I also expect Maribor to be at a higher level as they have already played 6 friendlies, their league is going to start this weekend whilst Botev is still in preseason with only 4 friendlies played so far. Also it’s a friendly, but Maribor beat CSKA Sofia 2:1 in a friendly last week. CSKA finished above Botev in the league, and beat them 2:1 in the last game they played.
