Kawasaki Frontale and Oita Trinita lock horns in this Emperor's Cup 1/16-finals clash Wednesday evening Beijing time. Kawasaki play in the J1 League, the highest level of Japanese football. The Kawasaki defence has been a slight disappointment to me this season. Their defenders rarely make extremely stupid mistakes but their style of play has been pretty active – and sometimes a bit too risky. In some games some of their midfielders have been a little lazy – not been active enough in defending.. I do not expect Oita to be able to take advantage of Kawasaki's defensive vulnerabilities. Even if they were to score – I am quite confident Kawasaki will score two or three goals! Their chances of achieving anything in the J1 are very slim this season so I expect them to be motivated in the Emperor's Cup.. Some squad rotation from both teams' head coaches would not be a surprise though.. Odds of around 1.50 on Kawasaki getting the job done in 90 minutes of play are widely available on the betting market. We will eagerly place a bet on them – going for the 6th straight winner!

According to a well-known and respected German website, Transfermarkt.com, the hosts are clearly the bigger team here! Indeed, their squad has an estimated market value of some 16 million euros. This is too low though. Some 18-19 million would be a more accurate number. The Oita Trinita players are valued at some seven million euros which is moderately too high. Oita Trinita played in the J1 League in 2021 but were relegated after the season and are in decline.. They are currently in 14th place in the league table after 23 rounds of play. They have grabbed only 28 points and their number of xPTS is even lower – 25.04 to be precise. Their offense has lacked basically everything this season: speed, creativity, individual skill and passing accuracy at critical moments.. They have scored a pathetic 19 goals in the J2 – only the rock-bottom team, Kusatsu, have scored less goals. They usually play pretty passive, defensive football and their defence has been okay this season. They have conceded 23 goals but their number of expected goals allowed (xGA) is 28.33. Yes, their tactic has worked pretty well in many games in the J2 – taking 10 draws – but if they let a team of Kawasaki's level to have the ball – defending with 10 or perhaps even all 11 men – it would be a big surprise for Oita to last for the full 90 minutes without conceding at least one goal.. Oita have won just one of their last 11 games. In their last game they took an undeserved win over Iwaki, a pretty limited team, on the road. The hosts had more goal attempts (14-7), shots on goal, shots off target (12-5), corner kicks, attacks and dangerous attacks. This win does not really excite me ahead of this massive challenge against Kawasaki.. Before this it was a goalless draw at home against Kofu. It was a pretty low-level and boring game – both teams had only two shots on goal. Kofu played below their normal level in this game. In round 21 Oita were simply terrible, losing to a newly-promoted team, Kagoshima, currently in 18th place, 0-3 on the road. The final score does, in all honesty, flatter Kagoshima to some extent.. Even so, the Oita defence was very disappointing in this game - especially in terms of structure.. Indeed, they look very imbalanced on the pitch for the most of the 90 minutes of play.. In round 20 Oita were very disappointing – losing to Tochigi 0-2 at home as clear favourites. It was a pretty balanced game as a whole though.

Kawasaki, on the other hand, have played four draws in a row and must be eager to finally get a win! They would have deserved all three points in two – maybe even three of their last four games. In their most recent match they faced Iwata and it was a 2-2 draw. Kawasaki were, however, clearly the better team on the pitch. They had 66% ball possession and recorded many more goal attempts, shots on target, shots off goal, total passes, completed passes, attacks, dangerous attacks – 90-28. They also generated more in expected goals (xG). Before this they were pretty clear underdogs at home against a dangerous team, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, and it was a 1-1 draw after a balanced clash as a whole. In round 20 Kawasaki were very unlucky not to beat Shonan Bellmare at home. Indeed, they pushed hard – boosted by their loud fans and had a whopping 25 goal attempts – the visitors managed only seven. In round 19 Kawasaki took a 2-2 draw at Denka Big Swan Stadium in Niigata as solid underdogs according to the bookies. However, they were probably not happy with a draw! Indeed, they recorded many more goal attempts, shots on goal, shots off goal, corner kicks, attacks and dangerous attacks - 66-33.
