Argentina has been very convincing so far and I expect them to win this fixture easily.

They are in brilliant form with 8 victories in a row, and qualified easily in their group. In the last round Scaloni made rotations showing the strength of his deep squad. And the reserves showed how strong and competitive this team is, beating Peru 2:0 when they had nothing on play, just the pride and the ambition to win.

Laurato Martinez is one player I want to mention in this Copa America. Yes, Leo Messi has been the best player of the team in the first two rounds against Canada and Chile, but Lautaro showed that even coming from the bench, he is one of the best strikers in the tournament. Is coming in great form, with 4 goals so far (topscorer of Copa America) and against Peru he had the chance to be starter, and scored two goals. Martinez has scored in four straight matches for La Seleccion and deserves to get the start here.

Argentina is also yet to concede, showing a very strong defense with Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez. Canada generated a bit more but Peru and Chile weren’t able to have any good chance, generating only 0.29 and 0.14 expected goals respectively.

Argentina have impressively lost just two of their last 60 international matches since the summer of 2019 which is a signal of how strong they are, being a very difficult team to beat and favorite to win the tournament alongside Uruguay. The whole squad has plenty of confidence.

Leo Messi could miss this game due to an injury, but as said Argentina has a very depth and strong squad with plenty of alternatives. Yes, Leo Messi is their main man, but with Laurato in great form, as well as Mac Allister and Di Maria, I see Argentina with enough quality to win here, even without Messi.

Ecuador, as opposed to Argentina, had to play at 100% in their last game against Mexico, where they achieved a draw which secured them 2nd position. They played really bad there, defending the whole second half inside their area, and again conceded many chances, which has been happening during the whole tournament. For me it was a miracle to see them not losing that game. Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez had five shots in their meeting, and If Ecuador allows Lautaro Martinez to get the ball in similar positions, it’s going to be a very long night for the underdogs.

Of the eight teams to advance from the group stage, only Canada had a higher xG conceded than the 3.4 that the rivals had against Ecuador. And that’s concerning, given Canada were in a group with Argentina and Ecuador in an easy one with Mexico, Venezuela and Jamaica.

So far they showed competitive spirit but I have seen them as a very weak team. They just beat Jamaica (probably the worst team in the tournament) and although they won 3:1, they struggled a lot and were close to equalize.

Furthermore, I see them limited by coach Felix Sanchez Bas. Although they have some interesting players, their tactics are terrible and are very defensive, playing like a small team.

Their plan for this fixture will be the same. Defend the whole game, try to be lucky achieving a draw and reaching the penaltis. But Argentina has a lot of resources, different alternatives, and have shown that they are strong enough with or without Messi.

There’s a huge difference in quality, form and confidence to this game. Ecuador has been terrible in both attack and defense, whilst Argentina has been brilliant at the back and also upfront. I cannot see any other result than an easy Argentina’s victory here. For me this round is like 90-10% for Argentina.
