Spain should win this easily.

Spain has been (surprisingly for me) one of the best teams in the group stage. With 3/3 wins, they have been the only team who is yet to concede a goal. Although they were a bit lucky against Croatia, against Italy and Albania they defended very well, conceding very few chances. Italy generated just 0.21 expected goals (and 1 shot on target) and Albania, who was fighting for qualifying, generated just 0.42 expected goals. This is great because I expected Spain to have their weak point in the defense.

The most positive note is that even some reserves showed in the game against Albania that they are ready to compete and make a good game. Grimaldo made a great performance, as well as Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino.

However, the expected defense will be the same: Carvajal, Cucurella, and the doubt is between Laporte and Nacho. And if they continue at the same level, I expect another goal to nil for Spain.

This Spain is a different team to the one we are used to where there are many passes. Although they do keep possession well they are much more direct with it and we see this with 5 goals so far. Upfront, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams look unstoppable. But also Morata looks good and confident, which is surprising for me.

Overall Spain is performing much better than I expected, and I believe they’ll continue at this level against weak teams where they’ll dominate and concede few chances. The question is if they are able to beat teams like France, Germany or England. But teams like Georgia should be a very easy job for them.

Georgia has been the surprise of the tournament, as they had one of the worst squads in the EURO. However, they have two great players in the most important zones: goalkeeper Mamardashvili and striker Kvaratskhelia. Both of them have been the best Georgia’s players in the three games so far, and I believe will be the key here.

Georgia will try to defend, waiting for Mamardashvili to make amazing saves as always, holding the draw as much as they can, and trying to make some good counters with Kvaratskhelia.

However, I believe we can take the game against Portugal seriously. Portugal played without motivation and with reserves there as they were already qualified, and also Georgia was lucky scoring at 2’, so they could control the rest of the game whilst Portugal was already thinking of the ⅛ finals.

Georgia is a counter attack team, and that’s the plan they’ll try here. However, the quality difference here is huge and Spain is in great form and full of confidence, so I expect them to dominate this fixture and make an easy victory. We must remember that both teams played in the EURO Qualifiers in September and November, where Spain won 1:7 and 3:1 and Georgia was totally outplayed with 30% possession.
