I have big expectations with Uruguay in this tournament. For me they are real title contenders, alongside Brazil and Argentina. They have a great manager with Marcelo Bielsa, good players, and are in great form.

I have no doubts that they’ll win this group, as their rivals are simply too weak for them and should be able to win all games easily.

Have several players in peak form such as Nuñez, Valverde, Araujo, Ugarte or Betancur, all of them coming from good seasons with their clubs.

In the World Cup qualifiers finished second, 2 points below Argentina with 13 goals scored in 6 games. Their only defeat came against Ecuador as they struggled to adapt to Quito’s altitude. They managed to beat Brazil (2:0) and Argentina (0:2), the two best national teams in South America.

I saw some of those games and Uruguay showed a very high level, I saw them as a very strong team in all lines: defense, midfield and attack. Are also a team who always wants to score more goals, always going forward and attacking, that’s why I believe it is not a bad idea to bet on them with a handicap. If they have the chance, they will score as many goals as possible, they won’t speculate with a short result.

In their last friendly before the Copa America they destroyed Mexico, winning 0:4. Curiously, Mexico beat Panama 0:3 just 3 months ago in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals.

Panama is also an interesting team who could fight for the second position and make a difficult game for Uruguay. Of course they don’t have the same quality, their squad value is less than 25MM Euros whilst Uruguay is above 480MM, so there’s a clear quality difference.

However, are coming in good form to this tournament, with confidence to reach at least the ⅛ finals. They played the Gold Cup final in 2023, where they were dominated and lost 1:0 against Mexico, whilst in the CONCACAF Nations League reached the semifinals losing again against Mexico as mentioned above.

Have some experienced players who are key for them, such as midfielder Carrasquilla, Murillo or Puma. However, none of them are playing in strong teams in Europe. Only Murillo has some experience with Marseille. Have a good core of players and could make some surprise in this tournament, but are also a very limited team in terms of goal, as they lack quality upfront and struggle a lot to generate chances.

Curiously in November they also played a friendly against Uruguay U20 where they won just 0:1.

I believe that Panama will compete here, trying to make a large game and wait for their chance. But I also believe that Uruguay is a very strong team and simply too good for Panama. If they score a goal in the first half they will find more spaces in the second half to score easily 2-3 goals more.
