TURKEY - PORTUGAL

Turkey played a very interesting and offensive game in the previous round against Georgia, winning deservedly 3:1. For me they are the favorites to qualify, but as second placed.

Have a very young team who is lacking experience, but is also showing a huge personality. Arda Guler was the man of the match, but also Mulder and Yildiz played a great game. In this fixture Calhanoglu will be the key, as he needs to bring experience to the midfield to control the tempo of this game.

However, Turkey’s defense left many doubts in the previous fixture. Concede many chances from a very weak team like Georgia, and surely will struggle against strong teams like Portugal. Georgia generated 15 shots, 2.03 expected goals and one shot to the post.

I expect them to attack here and play offensive, but if they do the same as they did against Georgia, leaving spaces and chances at the back, they will be killed by Portugal, who has one of the best attacks in the EURO.

Portugal struggled but managed to win against the Czech Republic, in a game which gave them confidence and also the lesson to play at 100% from the beginning, keeping possession and control of the game, but also need to be very cautious with counters which is where Turkey can hurt them.

The truth is that the Czech Republic scored a lucky goal generating only 1 shot on target, 31% possession and 0.22 expected goals, and Portugal’s victory was well deserved.

Although I see Turkey as a bit more dangerous than the Czech Republic, I also believe that the Turkish team isn’t able to defend well during 90 minutes against a strong team like Portugal, who will dominate the game and has the ability to generate plenty of chances against defensive teams, keeping well controlled the counters and their defense.

I think that Turkey can score some goal here but if we see an open game, Portugal clearly has the advantage with their quality upfront.

BELGIUM - ROMANIA

Crucial game for Belgium, who achieved a bad (and undeserved) result in the first fixture against Slovakia. They need to win here if they want to have chances to qualify, and I believe they can do it.

For me they were the favorites to tin this group, as have the best squad and more experienced. I’m sure that if they make the same performance as they did against Slovakia, they will win this fixture. And given their current situation, I believe they’ll do it, with a strong performance.

Onana, De Bruyne and Faes made a good game, but I expect much more from them, especially from Onana and De Bruyne who are the key players for this team. Lukaku had two goals disallowed by VAR but he generated chances and scored twice. He always made good tournaments with Belgium, and I can’t see him leaving this EURO without scoring a single goal.

On the other hand, Romania lacks quality and experience. I think they over performed against Ukraine, achieving a huge result but also helped by the fact that Ukraine made a terrible performance, especially in defense conceding easy goals. They just had 34% possession and doing the same against Belgium, will concede a lot of chances.

Dennis Man was their best player, but overall all the team performed very well and above the expectations. I expect them to back to reality in this fixture, which is among the worst teams in the tournament.

Their defense simply don’t have enough level to keep quiet top players like Trossard, De Bruyne or Lukaku. Although they are a defensive team and will try to keep the goal to nil, I don’t see them able to do it leaving the possession and control of the game to a team with the quality that Belgium has, especially upfront.

I expect Belgium to concede very few chances here. They’ll need a lot of patience to find the spaces, as Romania will be happy with a draw here and will play ultra-defensive. But I’m sure that with De Bruyne, who is one of the best players finding assists where nobody else can see them and Lukaku upfront to finish them, they’ll do it and get the victory.
