Peru is coming in very poor form to this tournament and I don’t expect them to qualify in this group.

They finished at the bottom of the World Cup qualifiers played in 2023, where just achieved 2 points from 2 draws (Venezuela and Chile) in 10 rounds, scoring just 1 goal. It’s true that Chile didn’t make good qualifiers either, as they finished 8th and didn’t qualify. However, Chileans have improved a lot in recent months.

Regarding Peru, they are in the middle of a regeneration process, adding new youngsters to the squad and changing their style, playing more offensive and dynamic. Their friendlies to prepare this tournament were too easy, as played against very weak team: El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua… Only Paraguay was a similar team and drew 0:0 in a very equal game, whilst Chile beat Paraguay 3:0 10 days ago.

They are not in the best conditions to play this Copa America, and don’t have big individualities which are much needed in a tournament like this one. Striker Gianluca Lapadula (Cagliari) winger Bryan Reyna (Belgrano) could be their main players here, as captain and best player Renato Tapia refused to play due to problems with the Federation and also because he has not club at the moment and doesn't want to suffer any injury.

On the other hand, Chile is coming in a much better form. They made good friendlies to prepare for this tournament, beating Albania 0:3 (who is playing very well in the EURO at the moment), Paraguay 3:0 (who drew 0:0 against Peru) and making a great performance against France, losing 3:2 in Marseille.

All of this happened with new coach Gareca, who replaced Cordova after their terrible qualifiers to the World Cup. With Gareca the team has more confidence, is playing much better with 8 goals scored in 3 games against good/competitive sides, and is coming with ambition to this fixture.

Chile has very good players, some of them playing in big clubs in Europe. The main one is Monaco's defender Maripan, but also striker Ben Brereton (Sheffield United). Victor Davila (CSKA Moscow) is also a very important piece for coach Gareca: since his arrival, Victor Davila has played 90 minutes in three games, scoring 3 goals (one in each game) and giving 2 assists.

This will be a very equal game, but I see Chile favorite. They have a better squad and are coming in a much better form with new coach and also their recent friendlies have been great with solid performances, whilst Peru is the opposite: they changed the coach as well but without good results, playing against poor teams in the previous friendlies, and they have been one of the worst teams in the South American World Cup qualifiers. And apart of all of this, Peru will be without their best player and captain Tapia.
