Slovakia, who is one of the worst teams in the EURO, were very lucky in the game against Belgium. They won 0:1 but Belgium had two goals disallowed by VAR, 1.97 expected goals generated and many chances wasted. Slovakia found an early goal at 7’ and just dedicated the rest of the game to defending and wasting time.

However, I still can’t see them making big things in this tournament. We must remember that in 4 of their last 5 EURO failed to score. Their key players are Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka (who was the man of the match against Belgium), captain and CB Skriniar, midfielder Lobotka and their main threat upfront will be Bozenik, who could be an isolated figure for Slovakia as we saw against Belgium where he struggled to find good chances or even touch the ball in good conditions.

I think they won’t have the same luck as they had against Belgium. As they always do, they will use a defensive system and will be happy with a draw, as with 4 points they could almost qualify to the ⅛ finals. However, I expect them to struggle here and be dominated, conceding chances. And Dubravka won’t always be the hero of the game to keep the goal to nil.

Ukraine made a poor performance against Romania in the opening game, losing 3:0. I think that result was exaggerated, as Ukraine was for me one of the dark horses in this tournament and has quality to make things much better.

Lunin made a terrible game, whilst only their leader and star Mudryk made a good performance. I still believe they can qualify in this group, as they have several good players and still have to show their best, such as Dovbyk or Zinchenko.

However in that game against Romania we saw some very good minutes and overall they controlled the game, generating more chances (14 shots, 4 more than Romania) and controlling the possession with 66%. However, they made terrible mistakes in defense which I believe they won’t repeat. Furthermore, Slovakia is a worse team than Romania in my opinion.

Slovakia will defend here, leaving the control of the game to Ukraine. And that won’t be the best plan as Ukraine has plenty of quality upfront so if they dominate the ball near to Slovakia’s area, will kill them as they have several good assist-mans and also good strikers who are very effective.

Based on my analysis of the tournament and each team, and also the previous results, I see Ukraine as the favorite here. Slovakia were very lucky against Belgium and Ukraine wasn’t at their expected level against Romania. I expect Slovakia to show their real level (one of the worst teams in the tournament) and Ukraine to show a much more competitive face, as everybody expects to see from a team who recently drew against Germany, Italy and England.
