On Saturday, the first real Euro 2024 day is going to start! The first game of the day is going to be between Hungary and Switzerland. Teams are in group A together with Germany and Scotland. In this game, I predict Switzerland's win.

During the Euro qualifiers, Hungary was the best Group G team with 5 wins and 3 draws, a total of 16 goals scored and 7 conceded. The team didn't lose a single game but I can't say that the group was the toughest. Yes, they had Serbia but other teams weren't in the top tier. Switzerland played in Group I, the team had 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss, a total of 22 goals scored and 11 conceded. The Swiss team won the first 3 games and then started to struggle, giving some chances to Isreal to qualify.

Despite some concerns, I'm going with Switzerland. They were perhaps the most impressive offensive team during qualifying. They finished the group stage averaging 2.55 xG per 90 minutes and created over two expected goals in all but one of their matches. This is a squad that's been playing together under Murat Yakin for a long time. They know the system very well. They're very good at dominating the half-spaces. Their passing triangles are going to be able to pull Hungary out of position. Their defense conceded 11 goals during qualifying, but that was off of only 5.5 expected goals because their opponents simply finished at a high rate against them.

I have a lot of concern for this Hungary team out of possession when they're not able to just sit in their low defensive block. They're a bad team on set pieces, they're bad at defending on transition, and then they're very reliant on Dominik Szoboszlai to be their main guy in build-ups. So if Switzerland decides to take him away, I'm not sure they're going to be able to build through a Switzerland side that is a very good defensive team and very hard to play through.
