Espanyol is my favorite here.

Sporting Gijon is a mid-table team whose target never was promotion playoffs. However they made a good season, and managed to qualify in the last round with a lot of luck: Racing, who was in promotion and needed just one point to secure the playoff, and played against bottom-relegated side Villarreal B, lost his game. And Sporting did his job winning by minimum margin (and their goalkeeper made an amazing save in the last minutes) 0:1 to Eldense, who had nothing on play.

The lack of goal has been a concern for them, as they don't have any good strikers or scorers. Their main striker is Djuka, whose season has been very weak with only 4 goals, and wingers Otero and Gaspar Campos are the topscorers of the team with 10 goals each one. During the transfer market they made transfers for the midfield area (Roque Mesa) but left the attack empty, and they struggled during the season.

Dani Queipo (26 games starter, 3 goals), Djuka (37 games starter, 4 goals) and Zarfino (long term injury) are out for this fixture.

They are not in bad form, but their sensations and playing have had everything during these last games. Are mainly a defensive team, but today at home will be forced to dominate a bit more and leave more spaces. 40 or 50% of their football is based on the left back Cote, who is their best player and top assist man with 7 assists (+4 goals).

On the other hand, Espanyol has the best squad in the league and promotion has always been their main target. I’m worried about their mental situation, as they had the target to be promoted directly (TOP2) and the playoff is a blow for them. However, I expect them to forget that and show that they are the best team in the playoff, qualifying to the next round and even winning the playoff and promoting to La Liga again.

They have been struggling recently to win games, suffering many draws even against weak-relegation teams like Andorra or Amorebieta. However, they are also unbeaten since February 10th, almost 4 months ago.

Espanyol has been the team in the whole league with fewer defeats, only 7 in 42 rounds. But the huge number of draws (18) made them lose the TOP2. In terms of quality, they are undoubtedly much better than Sporting Gijon. Have several players who are class above for this league, such as winger Puado, offensive midfielder Melamed, or ex-Barcelona’s striker Braithwaite. All of them are among the best players in the league, especially the striker who has been the topscorer with 22 goals, whilst Puado scored 13.

Espanyol don’t have any important missings and I expect them to dominate this fixture, showing their superior quality. Sporting will try to win as they know that the second leg away will be very difficult, but I don’t see them able to do it if Espanyol shows their best version.
