Spain 2nd division playoffs first leg.

Oviedo is a mid-table team who managed to qualify with a lot of luck. In the last round they played against Eibar (who had nothing on play) losing 4:3. In 99% of cases they would have been out of the promotion, but Racing, who had 3 more points and was playing the last round against bottom and relegated team (Villarreal B) lost his game, which means that Oviedo qualified as 6th thanks to the goal average which was better than Racing. Even one point was enough for Racing, but they failed.

However, Oviedo made a great season and is fighting for a spot in La Liga, where they have not played since the 2000/01 season.

For this fixture they’ll miss their best player - veteran midfielder Santi Cazorla, as well as defender David Costas and starter midfielder Seoane who is suspended.

In their previous home game against Eibar, played in November, they were outplayed during the first half and went to HT losing 0:1. But in the second half they woke up scoring two goals, the last one at 90’. However, a draw would have been a fairest result. Then, they also played past week the last league round where, as mentioned above, with nothing on play, Eibar managed to beat Oviedo 4:3 which was playing with much more motivation.

On the other hand, Eibar is a team who is always fighting for promotion. They already played in the playoffs in the last 2 seasons since they were relegated from La Liga, and promotion has been their target for the whole season. However, they didn’t manage to achieve the TOP2 (direct promotion), although they were fighting for that till the last rounds.

Is a team with a lot of quality, difficult to beat and very strong in this league. Have a lot of experience with the playoffs, and in both of them played recently lost in the first round due to a defeat in the second leg. They use to compete well in the first leg, but in the second one they failed to manage the advantage. Also in both cases they lost against the promoted team, so they were also unlucky playing against the best team in the playoffs.

Their topscorer Bautista (17 goals) is out for this fixture, but Eibar without him scored 4 goals in the last game, so I don’t see this an issue. Captain and defender Arbilla is back and available.

I expect a very tight game here, where both teams will try to avoid mistakes and keep the match open for the second leg. A draw is very possible, but in any case I see Eibar favorite to qualify and play in the playoffs final round.
