Atletico has been lacking consistency this season, mainly due to their poor away performances. However, at home has been very reliable with good performances and a solid balance of 15/1/1, losing points only against Barcelona and Getafe (3:3).

They have almost achieved the target, which was the TOP4/UCL. I think that more due to Athletic Bilbao’s fault, who decreased their performances and lost many points in the last rounds (due to the Spanish Cup which they won) than their own merits. It doesn’t matter, the TOP4 is almost done as they have 6 points advantage with 12 remaining to play.

However, the ambition and intensity is not negotiable with Simeone. Especially at home where for some reason, Atletico is performing much better. Well, home performances are expected. What has not been expected for Atletico this season are their terrible away performances (6/3/8), but this won’t be the case.

Although they are without targets, I expect them to play with ambition and motivation, and of course they have way more quality than Celta.

Celta has been terrible this season. They have changed the coach and improved a lot, almost securing the safe zone which was in danger. However I believe that this is a similar case to Atletico Madrid: this has not been Celta’s merit, this has been Cadiz (and other relegation teams) fault who have had an awful season. This season will be one of the seasons in recent history in La Liga where it will be easier to avoid relegation. Cadiz, who is marking the relegation zone, has only 26 points with 12 remaining to play. Normally in La Liga are needed around 38-40 points to avoid relegation, and Cadiz most probably will finish with less than 32-34.

In a normal season, like the last ones, Celta would be in relegation and fighting for the safe zone till the last round. But in this case, they’ll need just 2-3 points more. They have 34 at the moment.

For them their crucial game is next weekend against Granada. Granada is one above the bottom, they are relegated and will play without motivation as several players will leave the team in 1 month. That’s the game where they are focused, especially because also Celta is in terrible form physically.

In the recent rounds we have seen Celta very tired, playing the last minutes of the games with a lot of fatigue and struggling a lot. They have a short squad so need to be very careful with this midweek round.

Two weeks ago they made an awful away performance against Alaves, losing 3:0. Last weekend they managed to beat Villarreal, but were clearly helped by the red card which Vilarreal saw at 17’ when they were 0:1 up. However, Celta again struggled in the second half and conceded a goal playing against 10, so had to score a late goal at 83’ to get the important victory.

I expect Atletico to dominate this game, especially because they have a clear physical advantage. Celta’s performances have been poor recently, beating mainly relegation teams and being outplayed by the top ones (Betis, Madrid, Villarreal with 11 players till the red card…).
