Crucial game for Betis.

After Athletic’s victory in the Spanish Cup, now the 7th place in La Liga will grant access to the Conference League in case Athletic finishes in the TOP6, which is almost done (they are 5th with 12 points advantage with 7th).

So now Betis (and Valencia) have very good chances to play in Europe next year: they just need to finish 7th in La Liga. And playing in Europe is the main target of Betis. They have financial problems and debts, so need the money that playing in Europe gives. This target is mandatory for them, also because they are a big club with big ambitions.

At the moment they are 8th, 2 points below Valencia (7th) and 7 below Real Sociedad (6th). So Valencia is the main competitor. Betis is now in one of the worst runs in recent years, with 4 defeats in a row. It’s very unusual for this team to see them losing such amount of games consecutively, and I expect them to have a huge reaction in this home game.

Betis at home is a very strong team, with a lot of fans and support, and always make good performances there. They have lost only 2 home games this season so far.

The main reason for the lack of results lately is their weak attack, as they are struggling a lot to generate chances and score goals, whilst in defense they are conceding much more than usual. Overall Betis is being less competitive, and this is a very strange case with this team and this coach.

The back of Isco at 100% is great news for Betis, as is the best player in the team and one of the best in La Liga. He knows very well to control the tempo of the game, to make the counters or Betis’ attacks, and also to control and hold the ball when it’s needed.

Betis has played just one game in the last 20 days, where lost against Girona (3:2), so I’m sure they’ll be very motivated to win this fixture and back to the winning ways.

On the other hand, Celta has changed the coach and improved since then. Won against Sevilla and drew against Rayo, with two good performances. However, both teams are close to the relegation zone.

Celta is marking the safe zone with 3 points advantage, and I’m sure they’d be happy with a draw here. They are in terrible form this season, this team has a terrible defense and are conceding goals very easily - 44 in 30 games.

The main difference with this new coach is that now Celta tries to dominate the games and attack more. Previously they were a very defensive team and now take more risks trying to get possession and control. However, they won’t be able to do that against a team like Betis who always have the control of the games and possession, especially at home where use to have 55-60%. Only Barcelona, Real Madrid, Las Palmas and Girona won the possession at Betis’ venue and I think this will be the key of this match.

This long break has been bad for them, as opposed to Betis. Betis had time to reset their minds, work hard on breaking the bad run, whilst Celta broke their good run and motivation they had thanks to their recent results.

I expect Betis to control the game and generate more chances. They have a lot of quality and I want to see them performing at their best, as use to be in the recent years where they have always been a very difficult team to beat and a very strong home side.
