Taking this factor into account Atletico deserve to be the favourites but only very marginal! Their current odds of around 2.20 offered by the bookies are way too low and the obvious smart bet is the Barca +0.5 goal handicap option! Atletico beat Inter 2-1 In the UEFA Champions League after regulation time on Wednesday. As Inter had been victorious – and clearly the better team in the first leg in Italy - despite winning only 1-0 – extra time was needed. The hosts eventually won after penalties. An emotional win but surely a draining battle both mentally and physically. Barca, on the other hand, played on Tuesday and have had one more day to prepare for this game – a clear advantage there! They also only needed to play 90 minutes as they beat Napoli 3-1 and 4-2 on aggregate. They fully deserved to win and qualify for the next round of Champions league as they recorded many more goal attempts, shots on target and generated much more in xG - 2.87-1.12 to be precise. 

It is true that Barca have not been even nearly as strong as last season but are still the second-best team in LaLiga, behind Real Madrid, of course. Their number of expected points (xPTS) is much higher than Girona's who are in 2nd place in the league table. Barca have taken 61 points – Atletico are in 5th place with 55 points. Despite being without some of their best players like Pedri and Gavi Barca have been undefeated in their last nine games – winning 6/9. Some of their performances have not been great but they seem to find the way to take points! The Spanish football media has criticized them too heavily in my opinion.  Atletico have not been in great form recently – beating Inter does not change this fact! The bookies have overreacted to this fine win over strong Inter – I will not! Atletico have won only three of their last 10 matches! Before beating Inter they lost their last game – 0-2 against Cadiz, a lowly team and were very bad! Atletico were priced around 1.80 to win by the bookies but managed only 0.24 in xG – Cadiz's number was 1.45! In round 26 Atletico failed to beat Almeria, the rock-bottom team that have not won any games in LaLiga so far! It was a 2-2 draw. Lastly I want to mention that According to a well-known and respected German website, Transfermarkt.com, Barcelona are the much bigger team in terms of players' estimated total market value. Indeed, the Atletico Madrid squad has an estimated market value of some 450 million euros. This is, in my expert opinion, too high though. Around 420 million would be a more realistic number. The Barcelona squad has a market value of about 950 million – which is marginally too high.
