After successive wins against Hannover and Hamburg (both of them lucky and undeserved), two teams fighting for promotion, Osnabruck suffered a brutal defeat on Sunday against direct competitor Kaiserslautern (undeserved last-minute 3:2-defeat). Perhaps this was the ultimate knock out for them in the relegation battle.

They are at the bottom with only 3 victories so far this season and now need a miracle, they now sit seven points behind Rostock, who occupy the relegation playoff spot. Two of Osnabruck’s three league wins this season have come at home, but no team has picked up fewer points at home (11).

Still, I respect their recent development. Despite having the worst squad in the league, they showed some good performances lately, and they brought themselves into a spot that is not as hopeless anymore as it has used to be.

But nevertheless, they are clearly inferior to Dusseldorf. Dusseldorf is technically the second-best team in 2. Bundesliga together with Hamburg and behind leaders St Pauli. Their individual quality in the offensive is outstanding with guys like Tanaka, Klaus or Tzolis who are actually all too good for 2. Bundesliga. So quality differences are truly enormous here.

Dusseldorf are also in a pretty good spot again at promotion battle and three points at Osnabruck are without any alternative for them. They have injury issues in the central defence, but Oberdorf and Siebert should form a totally solid central defence. They just have no replacements left anymore.

For Dusseldorf the promotion is almost mandatory, after finishing 4th last season they can’t fail again this year. However, they have been showing a good and competitive face against weak teams, as the majority of their defeats came against teams from the top positions.

Their attack is great with 52 goals scored in 25 games, which means the best attack in the league. Greek striker Tzolis is in great form with 14 goals scored so far, and 5 in the last 4 games with great performances. This won’t be a good deal for Osnabruck, who have conceded 49 goals and only Kaiserlautern (50) have conceded more this season in the Bundesliga 2.

The quality differences are just too large here. Osnabruck might be in a mentally different situation after this nightmare from Sunday, too. Dusseldorf are technically closer to 1. Bundesliga level, whereas Osnabruck do rather have 3. Liga level with regard to their team quality. Among normal circumstances, Dusseldorf should win this match, as I’m expecting a one-sided affair here.
