Girona is in the worst moment of the season, winless in the last three games with two defeats in a row. However, they can still fight for a very impressive target: TOP4 (Champions League) for the first time in their history.

Their last games were against very difficult teams: Real Sociedad, Athletic and Real Madrid. And except Real Madrid (4:0), they were very competitive in all of them , including Athletic (3:2) who are in great form this season.

Girona has been very solid during 25 rounds, they have an amazing balance of 17/5/3 with 54 goals scored, and the team is still full of confidence. Their results so far are not luck: it’s based on tactics, confidence and quality.

Their balance at home is even better: 9/2/1 with 30 goals scored.

On the other hand, Rayo Vallecano has changed the coach but still has the same problems: lack of goal. Their strikers are in very poor form, they have scored only 22 goals so far, and since October they have won just one league game: against Getafe who received two cards during the match.

However, they are still 7 points above relegation and have three teams below them, so they shouldn’t have problems with relegation because others like Celta or Mallorca are in worse situations. I’m also expecting some overconfidence in them, as they are coming from a draw (1:1) against Real Madrid. And when small teams achieve a good result against a TOP team (Madrid/Barcelona) they always decrease their level a lot in the next game, especially if it’s as visitors.

I’m expecting a match where Girona will put a lot of pace and intensity, and will attack a lot. Rayo Vallecano will struggle to generate chances here, and the only way to stop Girona is with a great attack (Athletic, Madrid), a lot of quality or nice tactics (Real Sociedad, Betis).

Girona beat Rayo 3:1 in the Cup whilst in La Liga also won 1:2 with a deserved victory, generating 3.95 expected goals. I see Girona a much better team, with more quality and able to score a couple of goals here. On the other hand, I don’t see Rayo able to score more than 1 goal here.
