This is the first match of any kind for both teams, the teams are far from ready, and both are going through massive changes. A few points to think about, I am writing this now one day ahead and there are no confirmed lineups or squads but at least MIFK are likely fielding the maximum allowed number of test players.

HJK are always the biggest club in Finland, but this preseason they have been in the media mostly for negative reasons.

The catalyst for the negative spin was that the Sports Director Takkula left, and also the interim coach Korkeakunnas ended up without a new contract.

The new sports director Mäki signed young Spanish coah Sibila, but it turned out that he has no UEFA pro license, and thus is not allowed to be a head coach. So now they have changed positions with assistant coach Virta, on paper.

Most of the key players of last season have left HJK, but so far HJK have managed to sign only two new players both defenders and one of them is unlikely good enough to be a starter this season. Luckily for HJK they have a good reserve side of young players and they easily pass this league cup with their help, but they are not good enough for the season, especially for European games.

MIFK have been a relegation candidate for years, and this season they have cut their budget even further and on paper look very weak at the moment, there is a lot to do for the new coach Romao. He is a big question mark himself with very limited success anywhere he has been in charge. The assistant coach Daniel Sjölund might be the key here, a legend and a real pro from the island.

A quick look at the MIFK squad:

The two best keepers of last season have gone, and their number one this season is Matias Riikonen (Inter Turku) with limited experience from this level.

The whole defense line is gone, including the top players Sumusalo and Granlund. This is really worrying situation as they so have signed only two new defender Auvinen and Okereke. Maybe Okereke is good, he had already signed with Honka, but that club went into bankruptcy in November

MIFK are planning to give responsibility to young talents Fonsell and Andersson, I seriously doubt their class. The new names there are Dahlström from KuPS and Ojala from Inter Turku. The midfield might be good enough.. but probably not, unless Robin Sid really takes a big role.

In the attack, there are no useful players. Olawale and De have showed their lack of class earlier, now they have signed Jayden Reid from Portsmouth who would be strong if fit, but will he be? Actually De is now on loan, I wonder what his new club is seeing in him? Latest signing is Swedish Adam Larsson, who is decent striker, but not on this level which seems to be one step too high for him.

This match is played at an awkward kick-off time, but as it is indoors anyway with very low capacity it does not really effect the fans, the arena will be sold out. The reason for the time is that MIFK want to catch a ferry from Helsinki back home to Mariehamn on time, it will be another long trip for them, even if it almost the easiest one.

HJK are far from good at this point, but this MIFK squad is not even closely up to standards.
